Thread My top 50 greatest classic film noirs of all time. When I say this I restrict my self to American and British films and considering the era ending with Orson well's touch of evil and beginning with John Huston's Maltase Falcon. I my add some foreign ones at the end.

How ridiculous for the Archbishop who provides your faculties to do anything as a priest to ask you to focus on your religious community and the people it serves (the people in need of exorcists)! My understanding is that as much as Fr Chad can’t publish anything for a year nor do any interviews or public ministry that he is still able to perform exorcisms, which is the charism of his religious community. For anyone to even imply that this is not of the utmost prudence directed by the Archbishop should reevaluate where their Catholic heart is! The fact is that Fr Chad readily accepted this prudent wisdom which should tell us all we need to know. Any Catholic who is looking at this beyond what is obvious also should do a heart check. The wild speculation around this situation is of the evil one…not the Holy Spirit.

Good movie, although wish Anthony Wong was in it.

I have now fallen asleep, or been interrupted so I can't finish the movie 5 different times while trying to watch Johnnie To's Election. Don't think it has anything to do with the movie but I again failed to finish it last night although I actually watched the first hour.

It is fascinating how many people now have no idea who Roger Ebert was. You get this a lot from both this sort of dolt and also from militant anti-intellectuals objecting to NY Times top 10s full of “obscure” films. The TV show was (among other things) a decades’ long appeal…

[Art bel @Dpnabokov]

Ebert unlike many had a moral core.

Roger Ebert's zero stars review of The Devils
https://t.co/NuquLlNTnq

Roger also gave zero stars to:

Texas Chainsaw
I Spit On Your Grave
The Hitcher
Police Academy
Death Wish 2
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

he gave 1 star to Blue Velvet & The Thing & half a star to Hellraiser

The first hour of "Hope" (2026) was completely engaging and had some awe-inspiring camerawork. The whole sequence of hunting the first alien was amazing. Na Hong-jin managed to hold the tension and suspense until that sequence.

As the movie progressed, it became a bit repetitive. Some of the fights were too long and boring. I read somewhere that the quality was CGI was intentionally lowered. I don't know how true it is. It didn't affect the movie experience for me. The lack of story and the prolonged fight scenes, especially the one in the forest were the main issues for me. Saying that, If there is a second part, I will definitely see it. There is a lot of potential to make it work.

AI threat is real. The slop "art" is a trap to make people think its not. Claude doesn't create images for a reason.

BREAKING: Two critical security flaws in PHP, the programming language behind much of the internet, are forcing governments to take websites offline, per the BBC.

The flaws were found by AI. Security firm Wiz called them the “most severe vulnerabilities ever discovered” by the technology.

Horror can play an important role in sparking a conversion, but it bothers me how quickly Christians defend horror fiction/film (esp. the latter) as something salutary to keep imbibing as they go forward in the spiritual life. I know that when I dip back into horror cinema, its usually out of a mixture of curiositas and a desire for spectacle, which seems like something that needs to be overcome rather than indulged.

(Her actual comments are a mess and aren't really making this case, but I guess I can see how she's generally gesturing in a direction I agree with).

Flabbergasted that Vivek Ramaswamy, down in the polls and almost certain to lose a state Trump won by +11 points, thought he could clutch victory from the jaws of defeat by getting his opponent’s estranged mother, who stayed with the man who raped her when she was twelve, to badmouth her as a liar in campaign ads just before the election. This is Ramaswamy’s ace in the hole, his Hail Mary.

Ramaswamy has no sense for decorum, no theory of mind for the average voter, and it is this total lack of grace and sensitivity that led him to thoughtlessly excoriate American workers as sluggish and replaceable two Christmases ago, thinking it would play well with the base.

Other politicians might have contempt for their constituents, but they know not to broadcast this fact, to keep it somewhat under wraps. Ramaswamy still has no idea why he is losing.

I am a fan of the "Alien" franchise because -- among other things -- it can tell you uncomfortable things you need to confront at some point.

Also one of the freakiest scariest books ever is the Book of Revelation, which blesses the human imagination in all directions

Just watched this last night also though it was quite a bit like a happy L'Argent, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. However definitely his weakest movie that I have seen I've very surprised he thinks this is his best. Although there is a scene with a car convertible top.

[DepressedBergman @DannyDrinksWine]

"Ariel" (1988) is a solid Kaurismäki movie that is filled with the usual deadpan humour unique to Kaurismäki alone. There were certain scenes in the movie that reminded me of "L'Argent" (1983), but It is not as depressing as Bresson's movie. While "Ariel" is a good movie, I expected a lot more out of it since Kaurismäki himself considers this to be the best movie in his filmography. Maybe I am a little hard to please.

[DepressedBergman @DannyDrinksWine]

While I normally go into movies without any expectations, sometimes I too get sucked into that trap. A few movies fulfil it, but most disappoint when one sees movies in that frame of mind. "Dragon Inn" (1967) falls into the latter category. The story is simple and so, the movie could have succeeded only with good fight sequences. But other than flashes of some good swordplay, I didn't witness much innovation in the action sequences to keep me intrigued. The atmosphere created inside the inn was laudable and there were some exciting visuals. The words of a dear friend of mine sums up the experience of watching the movie for me, "I was just waiting to say 'Goodbye, Dragon Inn'". I wish it were different.

@DrJoshMatthews Probably his worst film besides Stardust Memories.

I especially remember his marriage and errors of traditionalists sermons a long time ago, without him don’t know where I would be.

[Art bel @Dpnabokov]

I’ve served several masses and had meals with Fr R 8 or so years ago. Don’t like some of his demonology public stuff but he’s a good man, as far as I can tell, not surprised he is taking this correctly. Also his sermons helped me greatly.

CHAD (!) PRIEST CANCELLED

Oh wait:

"Archbishop Golka recently met with Fr. Chad Ripperger to discuss his ministry and his community, the Society of the Most Sorrowful Mother. During that conversation, the Archbishop asked Fr. Ripperger to consider a one-year fast from public speaking and interviews. The time will allow him to devote himself to the Society and to the people it serves. Fr. Ripperger readily agreed. At the end of the year, they will review the arrangement together."

It sounds like it was pretty amicable and the Bishop might be trying to get Fr. Ripperger to focus on his ministry and not just do the podcast circuit. Probably a good decision.
