Next week we'll be in Frankfurt for two of the biggest events in the scholarly publishing calendar.
@rschrobUK will be attending the @STMAssoc Annual Conference and Dinner on 5–6 October, joining publishers and industry leaders to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of scholarly communication.
Following the conference, Rob Johnson and @DylanStoran will be at the Frankfurt @Book_Fair from 7–9 October, where Research Consulting will be exhibiting in hall 4.1 stand G92. We're looking forward to meeting clients, partners and colleagues from across the global publishing community and discussing how we can support the evolving needs of the sector.
If you're attending either event, we'd love to catch up. Come and say hello!
When should you start thinking about evaluating a programme?
Long before the evaluation begins.
Lucia Loffreda shares three practical lessons on capturing useful evidence, responding to change and setting up programmes for better evaluation. https://t.co/XIV8DFATVG
Join us tomorrow at 1.00pm BST (08:00 EDT / 20:00 China / 22:00 Sydney) for Scholarly Publishing: Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. @DrCathyFoley, @alicejmeadows and Ning Zhang join Dylan Storan to ask whether publishers can plan globally when policy, funding and publishing infrastructure are moving in different directions around the world.
Can't make it live? Register anyway and we'll send you the recording.

Another year, another Research Consulting BBQ
Last Friday the team downed laptops for a couple of hours and fired up the grill for our annual summer BBQ. 🧑🍳Rob manned the tongs (no burnt sausages to report), and we swapped spreadsheets for burgers, sunshine, and the usual questionable playlist choices.
It's a small thing, but these moments matter — a bit of time together outside the day job goes a long way. 🌞
We’re pleased to be joining the @R4LPartnership General Partners’ Meeting on 21–22 July in Geneva.
This gathering brings together organisations committed to improving equitable access to knowledge worldwide. @rschrobUK will be attending to contribute to discussions on collaboration, access to research findings, and the future of global scholarly communication.
Looking ahead to the @AMRC Summer Social 2026 later this month.
Our colleague @rschrobUK will be attending this informal gathering of medical research charity professionals — a great opportunity to connect, share experiences, and strengthen partnerships across the sector.
If you’re planning to be there too, we’d love to catch up with you.
Too often, conversations about metadata happen within sectors - among publishers, among funders, within research institutions - when the real opportunity lies between them. 👇
What's the connective tissue holding research together? Metadata.
Our associate Liz Allen, Visiting Senior Research Fellow at @KingsCollegeLon Policy Institute, makes a compelling case in this guest post for Scholarly Futures: that without robust, consistently captured metadata, the provenance of research becomes impossible to verify — and trust in science suffers as a result.
From funding identifiers to contributor roles, the building blocks largely already exist. The challenge is making information flow seamlessly across organisational boundaries, rather than remaining siloed within them.
In an age of AI, misinformation, and ever-growing research volumes, this infrastructure has never mattered more.

Next week, Angharad Roberts, Senior Analyst at @rschconsulting, will be attending the 2026 DHCW R&I / NHS Wales e-Library Conference.
She will be taking part in the afternoon panel on What's on the Open Access Horizon, exploring how the open access landscape is evolving and what it means for research, libraries, and knowledge services in Wales.
The conference brings together voices from research and innovation teams, librarians, and knowledge experts. We're looking forward to joining!
Who will keep research data infrastructure open and running? Great reflections in this article featuring Jennifer Gibson and Kaitlin Thaney!

A proposed rewrite of US federal grant rules could reshape how publicly funded research is shared and conducted internationally. @rschrobUK explains why researchers outside the US should pay attention.

Of the 20 largest scholarly publishers, just one — the @APSphysics — earns top marks for the quality of its metadata. And when metadata is missing, papers can become invisible to digital infrastructure - including AI-driven tools.

We've published the latest edition of Research Consulting Insights, our quarterly roundup of perspectives from across the research and scholarly communication ecosystem.
This issue explores how research organisations are responding to changing expectations around innovation, assessment and infrastructure - from new approaches to research commercialisation to the role of customised research intelligence in strategic decision-making. It also includes recent project highlights and the latest instalment of our Meet the Team series.

We’re getting ready for the @arma_uk Conference next week - @rschrobUK, @DanKing_DK and Angharad Roberts, will be heading to Harrogate for three days of discussion, from 16 to 18 June.
We’re also delighted to be exhibiting throughout the conference, sharing our work on research strategy, evaluation, open research and knowledge exchange.
If you’re attending, do stop by the stand to say hello or learn more about our recent projects. We’d love to connect!
We're delighted that our colleague Liz Allen is heading to the @AMRC Small But Mighty event!
Liz will be taking part in a roundtable on 'all things research funding', sharing insights and advice alongside Dr Chris Macdonald, AMRC's Director of Research and Impact.
How do we recognise the full breadth of contributions that make research possible?
Join us on 19th June (2pm BST) for our webinar, where we will explore how greater transparency around contributor roles can strengthen research integrity, improve quality, and ensure fairer recognition across institutional, publishing, and funder contexts - using the CRediT taxonomy as a case study.
We're delighted to be joined by a brilliant panel to discuss: the origins, rationale, and future of CRediT (Liz Allen); the ethics of attribution in team science (Mohammad Hosseini); contributor roles in funding contexts (Sandra Bendiscioli) and the institutional reality of recognising research roles (Holly Ranger).

In our latest post, @rschrobUK and Théodore Hervieux (from @sirisAcademic) talk through how institutions could leverage today’s wealth of data to answer pressing questions, from detecting emerging research strengths to mapping how their work connects to strategic priorities.
Both Rob and Théodore will be at the ARMA Annual Conference in Harrogate, 16–18 June. Come and find us at the Research Consulting stand!

We’re looking forward to the Knowledge Exchange UK Conference 2026 next week.
@DanKing_DK and @FrancesPalmer04 will be attending the three‑day event, which will explore how universities, research organisations, businesses, policymakers, and communities can work together to shape a more resilient, innovative, inclusive and prosperous future.
@rschconsulting worked with KEUK to evaluate @ResEngland's pilot programme for shared TTO services. The report and outcomes from this work have now been published by Research England.
The articles feature six spin-out companies formed by the 13 supported projects, but the evaluation looked in more detail at the approaches taken to support and develop a wide range of commercial opportunities with spin-out potential.
These 13 projects form an important knowledge base in supporting further progress towards developing spin-out formation, enabling universities to access the right depth and breadth of expertise. In addition, many projects created shareable assets and supporting guidance that represents a strong legacy from the programme.

We're delighted that @rschrobUK will be delivering the keynote at Publisherspeak UK 2026 on 18 May in London, hosted by @Kriyadocs.
Rob will be speaking on this year's theme — AI Governance in Publishing — exploring how the industry is moving from policy to practice: How are AI tools being validated? What oversight is needed? Where are the blind spots?
The event is free for publishers to attend. Register your interest here 👉 https://t.co/1WGhFn1Ca3
Global article output has tripled since 2004. OA share has stalled at ~two-thirds.
That's the squeeze every consortium now faces — and the backdrop to our new landscape analysis for the Irish Research eLibrary (IReL).
