Various commentators are expressing some sympathy for Keir Starmer today. No sympathy should be given. Give sympathy to the pensioners, disabled, WASPI women, farmers, pub owners, small businesses, victims of the rape gangs, the millions of people hit by the cost of living crisis - all in worse financial circumstances because of his policies. The moment you finally realise you’re leading the most authoritarian government in our country’s history:

1️⃣ Introducing an official definition of “anti-Muslim hostility” that silences legitimate criticism of religion — 18 years after Parliament abolished such laws.

2️⃣ Removing the right of most defendants to have a jury trial, in the biggest assault on English liberty in over 800 years.

3️⃣ Requiring pub landlords to monitor customers’ private conversations to protect staff from remarks, comments, or jokes they may find “offensive”.

4️⃣ Clamping down on lawful social media posts, arresting an Irish comedian for gender-critical tweets and even threatening to ban access to X in the UK.

Lammy is pretending jury trials are simply ‘tradition’. They’re not. They are the foundation of public trust in British justice.

A jury of ordinary citizens standing between the individual and the power of the state. It’s the only guarantee that justice is decided by society, not forced down by government officials.

Remove juries and you kill the separation between the judiciary and the state, leading to a total breakdown of trust.

We already have very little trust in this government and its official bodies. Losing jury trials will mean …

▪️Increased public distrust in verdicts from often by a single politically aligned judge.
▪️ A higher risk of miscarriages of justice
▪️ A more more technocratic, less transparent justice system with fewer checks on state power.

It scoffs at the alternative strategy of the Great Barrington Declaration. It is dismissive of the Swedish parallel, arguing that the Swedes took some measures too. Of course they did. But there is a big difference between the advisory Swedish measures and locking people in their homes by law. And the Swedish outcomes are still better than ours: you can’t argue your way out of that, so the inquiry just ignores it instead.
