In just a 5-year time span, the diagnosis of ACL tears increased by 18.9% in the 10-year-old to 14-year-old age group and by 17.7% in the 15-year-old to 19-year-old age group.
The increase in ACL tears in children in the last two decades could be attributed to a rise in early-age sports specialization, increased competitiveness, increased time spent playing organized sports, increased awareness in ACL injuries, and better diagnosis modalities, like MRI
HOW CAN PRP BE BENEFICIAL IN ACL RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a new technology focused on enhancing the healing response after a sports related injury.
When used in Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstructive surgery, PRP has shown better graft maturation, improved donor site morbidity and pain control.
ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR ACL RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY?
There are many views regarding indications for ACL Reconstructive Surgery such as age, activity/demand level and degree of instability.
Most individuals, especially moderate to high demand athletes, regardless of age, who have a complete tear of their anterior cruciate ligament, as well as clinical and functional evidence of instability, are candidates for ACL Reconstructive Surgery.
During ACL reconstructive surgery stem cells are commonly harvested from the upper tibia and then are injected into the graft subsequent to its placement.
Stem cells are the most potent healing and regenerative factors present in our body. Healing subsequent to an injury or surgery involves a complex but specific sequence of events that requires various cells, such as proteins and growth factors to promote faster healing.
When used in ACL reconstructive surgery, stem cells have the ability to promote graft ligamentization (maturation) and incorporation (healing) into bone.
Eric is the other half of Dr. Desimone’s two PA team. He has been a practicing PA for over 15 years! When he’s not in the OR with Dr. D repairing a SLAP tear in a shoulder, or seeing patients in the office, Eric spends his free time on the water boating.
