I was happy to be interviewed on @abcnews' The World about the charges levied against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his coup attempt to overturn his 2022 electoral loss.
Here is my analysis.

@tknoll209K@apagliar Largely defended... I think those factors are often lost/disregarded. There is far too much of a focus on the linguistic aspect of "communication" and too little on infrastructure. The previous resources/organisations aren't there anymore. Org crime also plays a role
@tknoll209K@apagliar Dirceu himself actually explains the lack of Worker's Party influence over newer Evangelical leadership and some rural areas... Says PT was expelled/forced out a lot of those areas, a lot of local political leaders were persecuted/imprisoned (mostly post-Dilma), and unions were +
@tknoll209K@apagliar I agree... But even so, you don't actually see hundreds of headlines on what Flavio's imminent win would mean for the Amazon and the potential impact for global markets, etc.
I think there is also a local investor dynamic at play (BR market makers have drunk the koolaid since 18)
If I am honest, I don't feel like I can provide any level-headed analysis of what is happening in Brazil right now...
But I am really glad people like @apagliar and @BenjaminFogel are able to do so in an actually coherent way
As I wrote on Saturday: The fact is that investing in social disintegration is both an effective political strategy for Latin America’s new right and a means for imperial Miami under Trump and Rubio to assert their dominance over Latin America.
@apagliar@GregGrandin 100%
I have acquaintances and family members who have survived (and some thrived) on federally-backed loans for their small and medium-sized farms. A lot of them were saved by Lula-created financial rescue plans... All of them hate the Worker's party and vote for Bolsonaro
Submission to Washington abroad *and* the ability to remake institutions in their image at home. A totally coherent project embraced by pliant Latin American elites since independence: happy to serve foreign interests and degrade the state as long as they get theirs.
@profsarahj Yeah, it's done and dusted. Runoff will be in a couple of weeks, but there is very little hope.
And the results down ballot (Fed Senate and State governors) are even worse
@RenardFantastiq@jakesugarman@Datafolha At the risk of incurring charges of defeatism, hard to imagine there is anything to staunch the reactionary momentum given all that has already come out about Flávio. He should have been disqualified a dozen times over and yet...
I have refused to answer/get into the procedural debate re potential STF Justice removals until now...
I've been basically waiving it off as premature, far-fetched/nonsense...
Joke's on me, I guess?
