Libya: The Problem with Washington’s Emerging Approach
The renewed American engagement in Libya may be presented as an attempt to break years of political deadlock. Yet the emerging approach raises serious concerns about what kind of political order the international community is ultimately seeking to create.
If the objective is simply to reconcile Libya’s dominant political and military actors and redistribute positions among them, this should not be confused with resolving the Libyan crisis.
Libya’s instability is not merely the consequence of disagreement between eastern and western elites. It is the product of a political system in which armed actors, competing institutions and entrenched networks have benefited from prolonged fragmentation and weak state authority.
An externally facilitated bargain that accommodates these same actors risks rewarding those who have benefited most from the failure of Libya’s transition.
This is particularly problematic if institutional unification becomes an end in itself.
A unified government without democratic legitimacy, meaningful accountability and a credible electoral mandate may reduce institutional competition temporarily, but it does not necessarily rebuild the state. It could instead consolidate an elite settlement in which political and military power is redistributed while ordinary Libyans remain excluded from determining their country’s future.
After fifteen years of transitional arrangements, Libya does not need another formula designed primarily around personalities and positions.
Nor should international concerns over migration, energy security, regional stability or geopolitical competition lead to a policy of stability at any cost.
The United States can play an important role in Libya, but Washington should use its influence to support legitimate institutions, accountability and a genuinely Libyan political process — not engineer another accommodation among established power centres.
The fundamental question should therefore not be:
How can Libya’s competing elites share power?
It should be:
How can Libya finally build institutions in which political power derives from legitimacy rather than coercion, external support or control of state resources?
Without addressing that question, another political agreement may change the distribution of power — but it will not resolve the Libyan conflict.

🚨 Exclusive: Behind the Scenes at the G7 Summit… Why Did Abu Dhabi Want the Crown Prince to Attend? And Why Did He Decline?
Two weeks after the conclusion of the G7 summit held in Évian, France (June 15–17, 2026), leaked intelligence reports revealed the extent of the political tensions that unfolded behind closed doors. Fox News published an in-depth report confirming that the summit turned into a heated argument between Trump and the Italian prime minister. But what was not widely reported was what was happening behind the scenes.
Exclusive information we recently obtained from a high-level diplomatic source who declined to be named indicates that Abu Dhabi expressed an urgent desire for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to attend the summit, as it was convinced that his presence would break its strategic isolation.
However, Riyadh declined the invitation. It appreciated the French president’s invitation, but His Highness the Crown Prince’s schedule was filled with previously scheduled engagements, and he therefore declined to attend.
Leaks confirm that this apology prompted Mohammed bin Zayed to plead with Trump and complain to him about the isolation they are experiencing. I personally believe that this plea comes after the dreams of an illusory victory—which Netanyahu had led them to believe would be achieved against Iran—have evaporated. Therefore, Abu Dhabi is trying to return to reality, having realized that it miscalculated.
According to the information we have also obtained, President Trump promised Mohammed bin Zayed that he would try to repair relations with the help of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan when he visits Turkey 🇹🇷, which is expected to take place in the coming days. 🦅🇸🇦

The UAE is reportedly considering leaving the Organization of Islamic Cooperation after its recent exit from OPEC+. The OIC’s headquarters is in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where the Al Saud family uses the title “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques” to advance its regional agenda.
Abu Dhabi appears increasingly unwilling to accept Riyadh’s dominance in both economic and Islamic affairs. Tensions that surfaced during the Yemen conflict have only deepened amid the Iran crisis.

Congratulations to #Libya on signing a unified national budget for the first time in over 13 years—after months of U.S. facilitation as part of a broader roadmap toward peace and national unification.
Stakeholders from west and east set aside their differences and accepted compromises for the sake of their country, bolstering financial stability, defending the value of the Libyan dinar and the purchasing power of the Libyan people, and strengthening the Central Bank of Libya. This new budget will also support development projects nationwide and ensure financing for the national oil corporation so that it can increase energy production, revenues, and prosperity for the Libyan people and their international partners. The United States will remain at the forefront of diplomatic efforts to bring unity and lasting peace to Libya, such as the successful budget talks that resulted in this important milestone. We will continue to support Libyan efforts to unify economic, military, and political institutions and create the necessary conditions for successful national elections, with facilitation from UNSMIL and the roadmap of UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh.

Iran treats Lebanon and Hezbollah as tools of influence—not priorities to protect. When Tehran moves toward deals that serve its own security, Lebanon becomes expendable. The latest de-escalation understandings didn’t meaningfully shield Lebanon, leaving it exposed.
Hezbollah, meanwhile, has tied Lebanon to a broader regional conflict that the Lebanese state itself cannot control or sustain. The result is a country paying the price for decisions made beyond its institutions.
Bottom line, Iran seeks influence without paying the cost, and Hezbollah pursues a regional role beyond the limits of the Lebanese state—so Lebanon ends up footing the bill.
