Zoe didn’t need to say a word. Small-town gossip travels faster than a Green Lantern construct, and a rich, paranoid militia guy with a compound full of cameras, loyal “people,” and a history of knowing every extramarital move his wife makes doesn’t miss a thing. The “draw my wife” line isn’t just a joke, it’s him calmly flexing that he’s fully aware John already got the full, detailed, from-memory view.

The real controversy isn’t how he found out. It’s that the show casually treats this as an open-marriage power move for a controlling xenophobe while John (the “respectable” one) walks into it in under 24 hours. Either William’s the ultimate cuck who’s weaponising his wife’s affairs, or Zoe’s running a honeytrap for outsiders and he’s in on it. Either way, that scene is pure HBO “look how adult and messy we are” energy, and people are going to argue about it for weeks.

This scene is fun, but the comics make it far more uncomfortable than the cartoon lets on.

Guy Gardner was Abin Sur’s other chosen successor in Green Lantern #59 (1968). The ring found two worthy men; Hal Jordan simply lived closer to the crash site, so he got the ring and Guy was left as the spare. That is not destiny. That is geography and bureaucratic convenience. The Guardians have always preferred the convenient American test-pilot over the Baltimore teacher with the harder childhood.

Then Hal, after Coast City was destroyed, flew to Oa, slaughtered fellow Lanterns, murdered Kilowog, killed Sinestro, drained the Central Power Battery and tried to rewrite reality as Parallax (Emerald Twilight, Green Lantern vol. 3 sector 48-50, 1994). The later “it was a fear parasite��� retcon does not erase the original story or the bodies. Guy stayed standing while Hal needed a cosmic excuse to become a hero again.The cartoon lets them bond over the Guardians being “douchebags.”

The books show why that complaint is earned: the blue bureaucrats picked proximity over character, then watched their favourite son become a mass murderer and still treated him as the face of the Corps. That is the part people should be arguing about.
