This is spinning a little bit out of control. What is this movement on Twitter to denounce the existence of entire academic traditions, as though they should have never existed?
at the college open house today a couple of young guys came up to the English table and one asked about using AI for their essays.
I was ready: “Would you go to the gym and watch your bro here do your workout for you?”
“No way, I wouldn’t get big.”
“Exactly.”
I believe what Tyler wrote is true. But it is not an accurate rendering of what has happened in large academic departments in major state and research universities, thus encouraging, in its own way, a distorted picture.
Sweeping generalizations like this are false outside of the most rarified institutions. But nobody in the press seems to care what academia is actually like at most places.
