What a day celebrating #WorldPolioDay with Rotarians in Cairo!
From its extraordinary ancient monuments to its remarkable achievements in public health, #Egypt has shown what generations of determination can accomplish. Egypt eliminated polio over two decades ago. Together, we can achieve the same worldwide.
A huge thank you to @Rotary for its unwavering commitment to ending polio and for the incredible energy and passion at today's @EndPolioNow Carnival!
Together, we can #EndPolio!
On this #WorldPolioDay, let me take a moment to recognize the impact of @mbz_foundation's work. Their contribution goes far beyond funding. They're working hand in hand with us to tackle the specific challenges we face in the most difficult areas. They are assessing with us the last-mile barriers to reaching every child and are driving innovation.
This is what 21st century true public health partnership looks like. This is how we @EndPolioNow in the last remaining reservoirs.
On #WorldPolioDay, I am reminded that our commitment to ending #polio goes far beyond the virus itself. The people, expertise and systems built through this work are also helping countries respond to other health emergencies. Proud of what we do together, and determined to finish the job. #EndPolio
Strong and sustained health leadership from the #UnitedArabEmirates has been instrumental in our work to eradicate polio.
In Afghanistan and Pakistan, and during Gaza’s emergency response, the UAE’s support has helped protect millions of children from polio. Across the Eastern Mediterranean Region, this solidarity is bringing us closer to a #polio-free future.

Met with the Director General of MOH & EPI leadership of Madagascar to align strategies on boosting childhood immunization & protecting gains against #polio. Stronger together for every child's health! #endpolio
Last week we wrapped up the debriefing of the Nigeria External Polio Surveillance Review in Abuja, Nigeria. Grateful to the Government of Nigeria and our health partners for their strong leadership and commitment. Together, we are sharpening surveillance to detect every virus and secure a #PolioFree Nigeria. EndPolio #GPEI
Honored to present the Framework for Polio Transition Sustainability in the @WHOAFRO Region(2026–2035) at #RC76.The framework seeks to protect decades of gains by integrating robust surveillance, emergency response and polio assets directly into national health systems.#EndPolio
The adoption of the Polio Transition and Sustainability Framework at #RC76 is a commitment to keep #polio high on the agenda as we move closer to eradication. The real test now is turning this commitment into action: sustaining surveillance, closing immunity gaps and ensuring the capacities built through polio serve stronger health systems across Africa. #endpolio
Ending #polio in the Lake Chad Basin requires sustained political commitment, high-quality vaccination campaigns & strong surveillance across borders. At #RC76AFRO, countries reaffirmed that commitment. Together with partners, we must keep reaching every child and leave no immunity gaps for polio to exploit. #EndPolio
Glad to join @Devex to discuss efforts to #EndPolio & the contribution of polio assets during the #Ebola outbreak in DRC. Polio infrastructure (surveillance, labs, frontline workers) strengthen countries’ ability to respond to outbreaks beyond polio: https://t.co/MfuWaKWHIp
Did you know that at #WHA79...
64 countries took the floor
ALL spoke on polio
All were united in their message
All said we must @EndPolioNow
In a 🌍 world marked by conflict, mistrust and geopolitical division, this was an example of humanity with one clear voice.
Countries from every region, every income level and across today's geopolitical divides came back to the same simple commitment. In the year 2026, no child anywhere should be paralysed by polio.
That is the power of polio eradication. It is a purpose that brings people together. From Sabin in the USSR to Sabin Sundays.
It has brought people together...
and it continues to bring countries together around a clear, measurable, moral goal...
✅ reach every child
✅ sustain surveillance and laboratories
✅ respond rapidly to outbreaks
✅ protect mobile populations, refugees, reach every zero-dose child and access all including those in conflict-affected areas
✅ strengthen cross-border coordination
✅ systematically integrate polio assets into routine immunization, PHC and resilient health systems
✅ sustain financing until the job is done
WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Region, the last region with endemic wild polio, was strongly represented with Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Tunisia, Iran, Sudan, Morocco, Pakistan, Egypt, Qatar and UAE all taking the floor and highlighting their unwavering support for the push to end polio.
Partners reinforced the same message.
In global health, fragmentation is easy.
But polio eradication reminds us that when the goal is clear, the purpose is shared, and the child is placed at the centre, unity is possible.
The final mile is hard for a reason. But the world is still capable of walking that last mile together.

Happy to see Angola reaffirming its commitment to ending polio and protecting children across Africa through regional solidarity and collaboration at #WHA79.
“We are doing everything within our reach to eradicate polio, not only for our children but for African children”, reiterated Dr Helga Freitas and Dr Joana Morais representing the Angolan Minister of Health.
This spirit of shared responsibility and cross-border cooperation will help us get to the finish line. #endpolio
Encouraged to see Ministers in the Horn of Africa + Yemen come together at the #WHA79 and reiterate their commitment to end variant poliovirus. Protecting every child means working with urgency & solidarity across borders. Read how: https://t.co/pOlPDLZG4j
Encouraged to hear Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq highlight one of the greatest strengths of Pakistan’s polio programme at #WHA79: its frontline workforce.
Women make up 60% of vaccinators across the country, reaching children and communities every day, often in the most challenging settings. Their commitment is helping drive progress towards a polio-free future. #EndPolio
@AyeshaRaza13@PakFightsPolio
Today at #WHA79, I was encouraged by discussions with @AyeshaRaza13, representatives of @mohapuae and @mophqatar, and GPEI partners including GPEI POB Chair Mike McGovern of @Rotary, @ChrisJElias of the @gatesfoundation, @gavi, on progress and priorities towards a polio-free Pakistan.
There is real momentum and a growing sense that we have a genuine opportunity to interrupt transmission. What struck me most was the unwavering commitment to continue reaching children, even in some of the most challenging settings.
The next few months will be critical, and I am grateful to all partners standing with Pakistan as we work together to #EndPolio.
