The Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide campaign to tackle the growing crisis of drug and substance abuse, targeting regions with the highest prevalence. This initiative, spanning all 47 counties in 10 clusters, focuses on equipping communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent addiction and support recovery.
During a stakeholder meeting in Mombasa, which brought together representatives from six coastal counties, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, underscored the urgency of collective action.
“The fight against drug and substance abuse is a national priority. We must empower communities, strengthen enforcement, and provide robust support systems to break the cycle of addiction,” she emphasized.
The campaign comes in response to alarming statistics, with 4.7 million Kenyans reported to be using substances, including high rates of alcohol and tobacco dependency. Through awareness drives, capacity-building programs, and collaboration with stakeholders, the Ministry aims to foster a healthier, drug-free society.
