The problem is that catholic theology is based on platonic philosophy. In Greek dualism the spirit is superior to the physical world.

So they believe that something purely physical like sex needs a holy purpose to be considered non-sinful. The purpose of sex is procreation so any form of sex that can't lead to procreation is sinful.

I would find anyone who makes such a promise and doesn't show up to be contemptible. Sure "we should get lunch" can be a vague pleasanty, but once you make an appointment failing to show, especially without informing the other person, is low behavior. It shows contemptible for their time and they're not getting time back.
