Young Australian of the Year ‘15. TEDx Talks. Motivational Speaker. Human Rights Advocate. Deaf Interpreter-Auslan, ASL, IS. BA (CmMst LwSoc)’19 ❤️@BraamJordaan
Hey @TEDx Please publish this TEDx Talk on TED website? Deaf children & families of Deaf children worldwide need to identify with their role-models and peers. This week is the National Week of Deaf People, yesterday was International Day of Sign languages

@AdamCSchembri Made the mistake of reading comments. It gets worse and worse. To the point where people are adamant that ASL is just English on the hands. One even said it is English creole and has the same language structure, syntax and grammar as English 🫠🫠🫠
Content warning: shocking ignorance about sign languages and deaf people in the post, the quote tweets, and comments.
Right wingers punching down at inclusion is sadly not a new low.
Appalling to see so many deaf people having to explain that MAKATON IS NOT A SIGN LANGUAGE in #SignLanguageWeek
Makaton are signs adapted from BSL (in a highly problematic way) used with spoken English. It's actually English with key word signing, not a real sign language.
I'm sorry to say this is a really bad idea.
1. Makaton is not a separate language. It is a form of sign supported English, using some BSL signs, taken without consulting the BSL community.
2. The creators of Makaton mistakenly believed that BSL was 'too hard' for some children.
We celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities alongside our partners in the international disability movement.
We also recognize deaf people with disabilities, who are important parts of inclusive #deaf communities.
"Nothing about us without" us is our motto.
Convo Australia is coming to the Deaf Community Markets in Perth on Sunday 29 October 2023 at Shenton College, Shenton Park in Perth WA.

@ANZ_AU Missed out on getting points as I had a big purchase that needed to be paid for, ended up paying with my other bank card (not ANZ). When will you reimburse the points I was meant to get but couldn’t because the systems were down for so long.
One city done. Thanks Canberra for a lovely and productive morning. @billshortenmp maybe I’ll consider a career in politics as you’ve mentioned.
For now, see you super soon Melbourne!!
#LetsCelebrateAuslan
I’ll also be selling my brand new Auslan products - tote bags and pouches at two Deaf markets in Adelaide!
Will I be seeing you in one of these cities??
On my way to the airport. So excited to visit 4 cities on my 2 weeks adventure to the East and South of Australia.
First stop, Canberra. Then Melbourne, Sydney, and the last stop will be Adelaide!
Because I'm blind, an airline is saying I have to sit alone. We booked side-by-side seats. But when they found out I'm blind, they separated us. They're claiming it's their policy 1/7 #RightsOnFlights

23% of deaf youth aren't in school or working. That's 10% more than the national average! NDC aims to understand why this is happening. Check out the video to learn what we found.
