On the science of reading:
Kids are learners, not just brains running around
There is no “one way” that will meet all needs (yes…and)
Programs should be used as a tool, not as a law
The best programs are ones that support teachers

4/4 The authors add: "The pursuit of narrowly defined criteria of success in the form of test scores appears potentially harmful to students’ long-term development and educational success....[This] is particularly worrisome given [standardized testing's] worldwide pervasiveness"
3/4 The data clearly show "the potential costs of using external incentives & punishments (e.g., parents offering monetary rewards or teachers punishing bad behavior)." These controlling interventions undermine student well-being & don't even improve persistence or performance...
2/4 ...and "identified regulation" (kids regarding what they're doing as meaningful even if it isn't thrilling) - and also of the harms of extrinsic motivation (earn rewards or avoid punishments) & "introjection" (basically, internalized compulsion): https://t.co/j0fO3ePnDI ...
1/4 Just published: perhaps the definitive meta-analysis of research on student motivation, comprising 344 samples with a total of nearly a quarter-million kids. Clear confirmation of the benefits (for both academic achievement & well-being) of intrinsic motivation...
Duane Bark is the superintendent and AD at Markesan and has been in ICU with COVID-19 for 3 weeks now. His health took a turn for the worse on Friday and the family is asking you keep him in your prayers.
I never put rules on the wall of my classroom for the same reason that I have never put any on the wall at home. Because it starts with building relationships and expectations. Without these all the rules in the world won’t matter.
As you plan your lessons for next week, please don’t give homework or a project over Winter Break. Students need to time with their families and friends. It’s important for students to have time to “unplug” from school; and for you as well...
Strong principals challenge the process. They are the voice and the support for their staff. When district hands down initiatives or mandates that aren’t working they speak up. They’re the vanguard for their school and staff.
Teachers, the new year usually means long nights & weekends, but make sure to block out certain evenings & times on weekend for family, friends, & yourself. If you fatigue early, you will burnout before end of the year. You're a professional, treat yourself like one. Self Care!
Today was my last day working as a police officer. I had an incredible career, but it was time to give my Final 42 and retire! Thank you to everyone I worked with over my last 25 years. I have great memories of you all. I am looking forward to the new chapter in my life.
@Gladz486 It was a pleasure having Officer Gladwell serve as our SRO at Westwood Elementary. He cared deeply for all the staff and students in all of De Pere. He was a great colleague and friend. Congratulations on a job well done.
No teacher can "personalize" instruction if they don't have a deep enough relationship with a student to know what is really going on with them personally and academically to trigger their curiosity and light their intrinsic motivation fire to excellence.
"The best teachers in your school know the background of their students better than anybody and never use it as an excuse. The worst teachers know nothing about the background of their students and always use it as an excuse"
Getting real with @ToddWhitaker. #empower19
Don’t define your kids by a test score. If they know you love the effort they put in, they will run through a wall for you! The end result isn’t the test...what’s the rest of their life gonna look like? That’s the end result. #nextlevelteaching#DifferenceMaker#tlap#FLHornets
We are missing the big picture in education. It’s not about raising test scores, letter grades or report cards. It needs to be about creating experiences for Ss to discover their passions, to develop critical thinking skills and to have opportunities to connect with others.
Encouraging words never get old. Ever. If you want to make a difference for someone… build them up with your words. They don’t have to be special words… or profound words. They just have to be from the heart.
Announcing the 2018-19 Ruth Peterson and Roy W. LeClere Award winners! Congratulations to @sncathletics Megan Lau and Alex Vandenberg!
