@coolasleicester I'm local to this pub and their music is really loud. There's no way they should be allowed to have live music till 2 am in a residential area until they show they can contain it appropriately.

@WalentekLab @JMBecologist And the vast majority recieve an income and get sick pay. They just don't have the pressure completing of their PIs deliverables, which seems better to me.

@WalentekLab @JMBecologist I've heard bad things from Germany. I guess you get bad PIs everywhere, but seems very hierarchical, and difficult to speak out.

In UK PhD students are treated more like students, with their learning and development being the focus. I think that's appropriate. Most have an MSc.

Germany (not all PIs) has well known problems though doesn't it, with how early career academics are treated. Do you think this approach might maintain a toxic culture?
