Working with schools and trusts has taught me a very valuable lesson.
There’s almost *no point* in talking about improving teaching practice without one key thing:
A *shared mental model* of how people learn
Why is this so important? Let’s break it down...🧵
Healthy parenting means allowing children to struggle. To be hurt, frustrated, and to make mistakes without being rescued. Instead of “I just want my child to be happy” we need: “I want my child to be able to cope with everything life brings.”
A Fresh Start for an 8-Year-Old Boy Who Nearly Faced Exclusion
On his first day, he ended up in my office—angry, swearing, and lashing out. Then he took off, starting a chaotic game of chase around the school.
We kept our distance, letting him burn off his energy. Finally, exhausted, he sat down, red-faced and out of breath. No child chooses to behave this way.
I knelt beside him, and said, "This is your school now. You're staying here."
Sometimes, kindness and connection speak louder than any punishment ever could.
Following on from last week, check out this powerful oral history video celebrating Waveney Bushell. It explores her fight against racism in the education system, the misuse of IQ tests, and how the field has evolved. Featuring @DrMelMeheux#BlackHistoryMonth#TwitterEPs

It is one minute past midnight, and the embargo has lifted, so here’s a thing I’ve waited nineteen months to be able to say: no school will ever receive a single-word/phrase judgement again. They are gone, they are history…
