It is really awful the Cambridge debacle has put a lens on Sociology it is being ridiculed & delegitimised as an academic discipline. In some ways British Sociology & the Sociologists who have created this storm deserve what they are getting. But Sociology as a discipline has been responsible for important research on Class in Britain, on work, housing, leisure, education and community. Unfortunately this bread & butter research isnt fashionable in Sociology & amongst those who have power in the discipline. Like politics, the arts & culture industries Identity politics have struck again wrecking a discipline that was once important to society.

The East is Red, a song-and-dance epic charting the history of the Chinese Communist Party from inception to the founding of the People’s Republic, laid the ground for the Cultural Revolution. The opera’s choreographed movements are nothing short of a revolution itself, one which aligned a traditional folk piece with the state’s cultural apparatus.

As the music of the people was co-opted by the Party, so were the people themselves. With grandiose, intricately choreographed set-pieces, the opera turns the performers and the audience into the constituent parts of an intricate, dynamic mechanism.

The East is Red is an industrial revolution in cultural production. Its scale and all-hands-on-deck success both impress and terrify even sixty years on.

Nitrate Film is a series of screenings selected by the film programmer Kit Ramsay, accompanied by discussions led by friends of Verdurin.

The UK manages to extend rapid e-gate access to not just the Swiss and the entire EU but citizens of nine other countries. Why can the same basic courtesy not be extended in a reciprocal fashion? Without reciprocity the UK should end this arrangement.

Not actually true. Jonathan Rose’s 2001 study, based on some 2000 working-class autobiographies, library records and archives, shows that (roughly between the advent of 19th C education reforms and the mid-century arrival of television), weavers at mills were reading Milton while butlers and maids were reading Proust.

Agree - I'm doing research in Ashfield and the overwhelming conversation is about Politicians being poor quality, not understanding the local issues and not being connected to people's lives. The public will keep voting for different politics until the politicians change. The politicians still dont seem to understand that they cant change the public but the public can change them

Called it right after the election. My next prediction is that Starmer's successor won't be able to turn things around either, because they'll also lack the vision and cadre required to fill the void of representative politics and institute a new economic model.

Starmer's is therefore likely to be a strikingly impotent government given the size of its parliamentary majority. The populist challenge will, therefore, likely remain strong. 5/7
