🇨🇦 ON THIS DAY IN CANADIAN SPORTS HISTORY 🇨🇦
🏒 OCTOBER 27, 1963 — MR. HOCKEY CATCHES THE ROCKET!
63 years ago today, Gordie Howe made NHL history by tying one of hockey’s most celebrated records!
For years, Maurice “Rocket” Richard had stood alone atop the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring list.
The Montréal Canadiens legend had retired in 1960 with 544 career goals, a record that seemed almost untouchable.
But there was another Canadian hockey icon closing in.
His name was Gordie Howe.
On October 27, 1963, the Detroit Red Wings welcomed the Montréal Canadiens to Olympia Stadium in Detroit.
With the Red Wings trailing in the third period, Howe struck on the power play, firing the puck past Canadiens goaltender Gump Worsley.
🚨 GOAL NUMBER 544!
Mr. Hockey had caught the Rocket!
The Detroit crowd erupted, giving Howe a standing ovation that lasted approximately five minutes.
Although Montréal won the game 6–4, the evening belonged to Howe and his remarkable achievement.
And the story wasn’t finished.
Just two weeks later, on November 10, 1963, Howe scored his 545th career goal, once again against Montréal, to become the NHL’s outright all-time leading goal scorer.
By the time his NHL career ended, Howe had amassed an extraordinary 801 goals in 1,767 regular-season games.
His goal-scoring record would stand until Wayne Gretzky surpassed it in 1994.
But October 27, 1963, remains a special moment in hockey history.
Two Canadian legends. Two extraordinary careers. And one unforgettable milestone.
