An inherited IRA isn’t “extra money.” It’s a tax event with a deadline.

Since 2020, the rules have changed quietly, but the consequences are getting louder. Many beneficiaries are now required to drain inherited IRAs within 10 years, and starting in 2025, the IRS is enforcing penalties again for missed required withdrawals.

That means timing matters. Income level matters. And assumptions based on old “stretch IRA” rules can lead to unnecessary taxes or costly mistakes, especially for people in their peak earning years.
