There are no winners in the Lindsay Clancy case.

I truly respect our jury system and the incredibly difficult responsibility placed on those jurors. Whatever our personal opinions may be, they were asked to make a decision based on the evidence presented to them.

At the center of this tragedy are three beautiful children whose lives and futures were taken far too soon. The grief their families will carry is unimaginable.

This case also forces us to have difficult conversations about severe mental illness, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis. For those who have never personally experienced serious mental illness—or watched someone they love struggle with it—it can be almost impossible to understand how profoundly it can alter a person’s perception of reality.

As a physician, and someone who has personally experienced the devastating effects of mental illness within my own family, I believe these conversations matter.

Understanding mental illness does not diminish the tragedy or erase accountability. But it may help us recognize warning signs sooner, reduce stigma, and potentially prevent another family from experiencing such unimaginable loss.

Three lives were lost. Families were forever changed. And everyone involved will carry the consequences of this tragedy for the rest of their lives.

There are no winners here. Only heartbreak—and hopefully, lessons we can learn from it.
