COMMENTARY: Missed opportunity, IDT!
The Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) has issued a release acknowledging that unusual delays in handing down awards could erode public confidence in its work.
The statement follows a warning from doctors that the public health system could face disruptions if the tribunal fails to rule on their pay dispute with the Government by October 2.
Two pages of generalisations!
Yet, there is no assurance that, after six months, the doctors’ dispute is being treated as a priority. Nor is there any response to the troubling claim by trade unionist @LambertBrownJa that the three-member IDT panel that heard the dispute is grappling with interference and partisan pressure.
Leaving such a serious claim unanswered could itself erode public confidence in a quasi-judicial body that has earned national respect and demonstrated its value over the years.
And while the IDT is at it, could it say, at the very least, whether a ruling has even been drafted?
Opposition Leader Mark Golding addressed residents in St. Elizabeth last night on the government’s NaRRA legislation. He raised serious concerns about transparency and governance. Under the new law, NaRRA and the Prime Minister can override decisions of municipal corporations, NEPA, and other agencies — without having to publish those decisions in real time. Mr. Golding also questioned the structure: billions of US dollars to be spent by an agency with no board of directors, just one CEO reporting to a Minister who is the PM. That, he said, is not proper oversight. He noted NaRRA’s purpose now seems to have shifted to projects like a new KPH and upgrading the Hip Strip in Montego Bay, things that had nothing to do with Hurricane Melissa. Meanwhile, what people urgently need is a housing program to get roofs back on homes, and support for businesses to restart. With NaRRA not expected to be fully running until year-end, Mr. Golding said Jamaica is being denied the rapid response it needs right now.

INVESTING IN OUR YOUTH IS INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
It was a pleasure to join the Arnett Gardens Football Club Chess Summer School Prize Giving on Thursday. Seeing our young people celebrated for their discipline, focus, and strategic thinking on the chessboard is a powerful reminder of what community-driven programmes can achieve.
Chess builds minds. Sport builds character. Programmes like this build futures. I congratulate every participant, and I thank the sponsors and coaches who continue to invest in the potential of our youth.
This is what building with purpose looks like.

I Asked Dr. Chang This Question. He Had No Answer.
Yesterday I asked Dr. Chang a simple question:
Was he aware that a US federal court in Massachusetts has already ruled that these TCN arrangements are unlawful? And that the US government is now appealing that ruling to the Supreme Court?
Silence. No answer.
Jamaicans deserve clarity on deals that affect our sovereignty, our security, and our reputation. If the US courts have questions about legality, why doesn’t the government?
We cannot outsource Jamaica’s decision-making. We cannot gamble with agreements the courts are calling into question.
The people deserve answers, not avoidance.

“This is untenable! The whole purpose of the Integrity Commission Act is thwarted and undermined by the suppression of this report. The people, this parliament and the media have a right to see the report and it must be tabled immediately!”
Power without proper oversight is a dangerous precedent to he set when it comes to governance. Taxpayers eventually pay. We must ask why the NaRRA bill was written this way and WHO does it really benefit? Instead of taking valid concerns into account this Andrew Holness led administration prefers to be wrong and strong will push it through.

Senior trade unionist Senator Lambert Brown this week cautioned that the Government’s move to scrap incentive and emergency duty allowances for doctors who are mandated to work overtime could have a detrimental impact on the health sector.

We all agree that reducing sugar consumption is important. Non-communicable diseases are a real concern in Jamaica. But a flat tax on all sugary drinks will not change behaviour. It will simply increase the cost of living, especially for the most vulnerable.
Hylton Grills Gov’t: When Did FCJ Become a Private Company & Why Cut a Ribbon on an Incomplete Site?
Opposition Spokesperson Anthony Hylton says the Government’s response on the Morant Bay Urban Centre is a smoke screen that raises more questions than answers.

Opposition spokesman on health Dr Alfred Dawes has charged that the Government’s response to failures at University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) has been more about managing public perception instead of pursuing meaningful reform.

Hi I am Dr Khia Duncan. Jamaica is having a massive flu outbreak with influenza A. If you have symptoms of nasal congestion, fever, lethargy, joint pain please stay home. Do not go to work or send your children to school. You can book an appointment online @MDLinkHealth . We have Doctors available 24/7 that prescribe Tamiflu which is available in Jamaica and you can also get a sick Leave. Stay home and stay safe. #InfluenzaA #BadFlu #TheMdLink https://t.co/De4uBhdGew
Daryl - so you’ve spent your entire day digging around for things to try and “discredit” me instead of focusing on the real issues which are the ridiculous cost of light bills, lack of plans for renewables and 0 action on policy to help lower costs.
Let’s talk track record. When I had your job
- Wigton Windfarm was built
- I negotiated & got
Jamaica to be the FIRST Non NAFTA country to access U.S. LNG
- I negotiated & got the US government support for construction of the Windfarm in Malvern St Elizabeth and the Solar Farm in Content Clarendon
- E10 was introduced as an octane enhancer
List one of your achievements as Energy Minister? In fact list one significant achievement in the energy portfolio that benefits Jamaicans in the last decade? I’ll wait…
Daryl this is such foolishness.
Someone sued claiming that the licence was illegal and it was overturned by the court.
It’s clear that you don’t understand what being a legislator on behalf of the people means but you also don’t understand legal matters.
It’s also why you believe that a new licence is the solution to our high electricity rate. The problem is your government’s mismanagement of the energy portfolio. The buck stops with you, now start working for the people instead of for PR.
Daryl you’re struggling and I realise you need help.
First and foremost we don’t have to wait until 2027 to have new terms. All of this could have been done in the 10 years you did nothing. In the end it’s government policy that will cause the price of electricity to decrease significantly not a change in the license. See below for the guidance you so clearly need:
What would a new JPS licence look like
1. No longer 20 years but 10
2. Abolish right of first refusal of the JPS to replace new Generation
3. Allow enterprises in Exclusive Economic Zone to generate and distribute electricity in the zone
4. Expand my net billing initiatives and expand my wheeling program
5. Provide greater protection to consumers against JPS abuse
Why is @darylvazmp afraid to do a one on one public debate with me on the high price of electricity ? Is he afraid that it will be revealed that he doesn’t have a clue about the various policy options and that we don’t have to wait until 2027 for a new JPS licence
