Continuing the unparalleled legacy of Dr. King by fostering a culture of nonviolence and active participation in our democracy.

#OTD In 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in American history. It did not come from goodwill alone. It came from years of organizing, sacrifice, and ordinary people refusing to accept injustice. That is how change has always been made.
Added 55 years ago today, the 26th Amendment guaranteed every American 18 and older the right to vote. DMI is working to make sure that sacred right is protected and that young voters know their power. #ProtectTheVote
Black and Brown communities are stronger when we stand together. DMI and @MiFamiliaVota are building the coalition and the civic power to protect what matters.
#OTD In 1969, patrons at the Stonewall Inn in New York City rose up against police harassment, igniting the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and other Black and brown trans women were at the forefront. Their courage echoes my father's call: the time is always right to do what is right.
The next generation of leaders is organizing, showing up, and building power in their communities. DMI is right there with them. Help us keep it https://t.co/hwzeudDBYt
Eleven years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry. The fight for equality and dignity for all people is at the heart of the Beloved Community
#OTD In 2013, the Supreme Court struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder. It was a devastating blow to the protections my father and so many others fought to secure. In the years since, states have rushed to restrict the vote. But that's not the end of the story. We WILL #RestoreTheVote.
The Voting Rights Advancement Act was introduced 11 years ago today. It still hasn't passed. DMI is fighting every day to protect the right to vote and build civic power in the communities that need it most.
#OTD In 2015, the Voting Rights Advancement Act was introduced in Congress on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, two years after voting protections were gutted in Shelby County v. Holder. John Lewis was an original co-sponsor, and the bill now carries his name. I truly believe that someday, we will pass it. We will restore what the Supreme Court destroyed.
#OTD In 1968, the Poor People's Campaign came to a close in Washington, D.C. My father launched it to unite Americans of all races in the fight against poverty. He did not live to see it through, but the thousands who showed up carried his conviction to the National Mall, where they built Resurrection City: 3,000 plywood shelters along the Reflecting Pool, in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial. Poverty is not inevitable. It is a policy choice.
#OTD In 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that should have come two and a half years earlier: all enslaved people were free. #Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and a reminder that freedom delayed is justice denied.
Dr. King called it the World House: a place where every person lives with dignity, regardless of where they come from. On #WorldRefugeeDay, that vision calls us to stand with the millions of people displaced worldwide.
#OTD In 2015, a white supremacist walked into Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and murdered nine people during Bible study. They had welcomed him in. He answered their grace with violence. We say their names. We carry their memory. We fight the hatred that took them.
Solidarity isn't a slogan. It's the work. DMI and @MiFamiliaVota are building lasting political power for Black and Brown communities across the country.
When we organize, mobilize, and stand together, every family has a real opportunity to thrive. Proud to stand alongside @MiFamiliaVota in this work. Learn more about our shared policy agenda:
