The future of the United Nations—and to some measure the course of the world—will be shaped by the candidates seeking to become the next U.N. Secretary-General. I'm glad to see two highly qualified candidates from Africa in the field, though every candidate brings valuable experience and perspectives to this important global role. An African serving as the head of the world's leading peace and security organization would help bring greater international attention and resources to the continent's opportunities and challenges. As member states consider their choice, they should prioritize a leader with the experience, independence, and judgment needed to strengthen the UN's ability to address today's complex global challenges. I'm interested to hear others' thoughts on who should be the next Secretary-General.
