Residents poured into the streets after Israeli Border Police shot and killed Alaa Mahameed, 38, following a chase that ended inside the city. Police claim he attacked an officer. Family, local witnesses, and circulating footage tell a different story: an unarmed man with known mental health struggles, stopped, and shot at close range. The municipality condemned the killing and demanded an independent investigation, not an internal police probe.

This is the chorus now heard in Umm al-Fahm: enough of cheapened Arab lives, enough of the trigger-happy response that treats Palestinian citizens as suspects first and humans second. Eight Palestinian citizens of Israel had already been killed by police gunfire in 2026 before Alaa. The pattern is familiar — chase, confrontation, lethal force, then a statement that the officer “felt his life was in danger.”

Alaa was not a militant. He was a man from Umm al-Fahm whose family says he needed care, not bullets. The people of the city are not asking for sympathy. They are demanding accountability, an end to the double standard, and recognition that Palestinian life — whether in Gaza, the West Bank, or inside the Green Line — is not disposable.

The anger in Umm al-Fahm is not isolated. It is the same cry that has been rising for years: stop the killings. Investigate them independently. Treat us as equal human beings.

B’Tselem — an Israeli human-rights group documenting occupation since 1989 — just released The Elimination Project. Director Yuli Novak said it plainly:

“All this didn’t start with the current Israeli government, and it didn’t begin on October 7th. The methods changed. The scale changed. The direction remained. In the West Bank, apartheid is still the framework for understanding the regime and the crimes used to maintain it.”

Not chaos. A project.

Homes burned. Communities emptied. Roads sealed. Livelihoods crushed. Children killed. Families pushed out inch by inch so Palestinian life becomes smaller, poorer, more fragmented — until staying feels impossible.

The West Bank is not a side story. It is the blueprint: one regime, two peoples, rights by identity.If your heart still works, let it work now.
