On May 15, 1957, 30-year-old Lawrence “Larry” Bader left his pregnant wife and three children, went fishing on Lake Erie, and vanished.

The next morning, his damaged rental boat was found washed against the rocks.

There was no body.

Authorities assumed Larry had drowned, and in 1960 he was legally declared dead.

His wife, Mary Lou, was left raising four children and eventually received roughly $40,000 from his life-insurance policies.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away in Omaha, Nebraska, a charismatic man named John “Fritz” Johnson had appeared just days after Larry disappeared.

Fritz became a bartender, radio personality and television sports broadcaster.

He married another woman, adopted her daughter and had a son.

For nearly eight years, nobody connected the two men.

Then, in February 1965, Fritz was demonstrating archery equipment at a sporting-goods show in Chicago when people from Larry’s hometown recognised him.

Fritz insisted they were mistaken.

Fingerprints proved otherwise.

John “Fritz” Johnson was Lawrence Bader.

He claimed to have absolutely no memory of his wife, children or previous life.

Doctors examined him but could never conclusively determine whether he genuinely had amnesia or had deliberately disappeared and created a new identity.

His television career collapsed, his second marriage fell apart, and he returned to bartending.

In September 1966, Larry, still insisting he was Fritz, died from cancer aged 39.

He took the answer with him.

Whether Lawrence Bader truly forgot his entire life or simply abandoned it remains unresolved.
