DSV Stories: Ken Griffey Jr and The Derby
There's something special about this time of year. Start of summer, the 4th of July and the MLB Midsummer Classic showcasing the Home Run Derby.
As a Mariners fan I lived for this time of year. School was out, I had just finished whatever Little League All-Star tournament I was in and was ready to enjoy the unencumbered bliss of summer vacation. I found it fitting that as the country's national pastime, the MLB All-Star Game festivities took place promptly after the 4th of July.
I was too young for the magic of the '95 Mariners. Seattle became my MLB team for one reason and one reason only - in the Spring of 1998 I found Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Jr. on the Nintendo 64. It was my first baseball video game I ever played. I poured in hours upon hours playing that game and competing in the Home Derby challenge with Griffey.
Still though, nothing matched the real thing thing. Live and in Prime time, 10 year old me watched in awe as the best of the best in baseball launched mammoth moonshot after moonshot into the stands. These players to me were closer to gods than actual men.
Shown here are Ken Griffey Jr's 1997-1999 Seattle Mariners Majestic Athletic AL All-Star Authentic jerseys. They would be the last he would ever wear as a Mariner.
In 1997, MLB switched to having the Derby participants wear special edition jerseys that were designed around the signature flavor of the hosting city. For my money the designs of the late 90s are the peak of ASG aesthetics. When we say they don't make jerseys like they use to anymore, this is what we mean.
The 1997 Griffey ASG run is a very tough find. The 1998 one shown here you do see around but this one comes with the purple outline of the numbers and name on the back. Just like Griffey wore at Coors Field. And the '99 one, while I couldn't fathom it at the time, it would be his last during his time in Seattle.
Few things bring back the nostalgia of the late 90s better than watching Griffey rake in the Home Run Derby. The backwards hat, the sweet swing and the undeniable swagger made Griffey the undisputed king of the Derby.
Enjoy the Midsummer Classic my friends. Maybe some 10 year old will be watching in amazement as I did 27 years ago that will give them the same feeling of wonderment and awe.
As the movie The Sandlot said, heroes get remembered but legends never die.
