A guy named nbatman on Reddit accidentally built the most useful website on the internet.

It's called FMHY (Free Media Heck Yeah).

This is the website Google delisted from search for DMCA violations, Reddit shadow-banned for promoting piracy, the Motion Picture Association flagged as a top piracy threat, and the RIAA pressured hosting providers to drop. It is still online. It is still updated every month.

Here's how it works.

FMHY is the index. The wiki itself hosts nothing. It just tells you where every free thing on the internet actually lives, organized into 14 categories with safety ratings on every single link.

There is no company. No CEO. No central server. Six anonymous volunteers maintain the entire thing in their spare time. Donations through Ko-fi pay for the hosting. Nobody profits.

Hollywood can't shut this down. Spotify can't shut this down. Adobe can't shut this down.

The entire subscription economy is held together by you not knowing this wiki exists.

Michael Jackson didn't invent the moonwalk. The dance was on film in 1932, 26 years before he was born. He did it on TV in 1983 and stamped his name on 51 years of dance history.

The first person on tape was Cab Calloway, a jazz singer who led one of the most famous big bands of the 1930s. In a 1932 film called The Big Broadcast, he slid backwards while looking like he was walking forwards. He called the move The Buzz.

A tap dancer named Bill Bailey did it on film in 1943. The movie was called Cabin in the Sky. He did it again in 1955 at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and called it the backslide.

Marcel Marceau, the French mime, used the move from the 1940s into the 1980s. His version was called "Walking Against the Wind." He pretended a strong wind was blowing him backwards while he tried to step forwards. Dick Van Dyke did a comedy version on TV in 1958, in a sketch called "Mailing a Letter on a Windy Corner."

In the late 1970s, a dancer named Jeffrey Daniel started doing the same move every week on Soul Train, a Black music show that aired on Saturdays. Jackson watched it. He loved Daniel's version, had his manager call the show, and asked Daniel to come teach him. That was 1980.

Two other Soul Train dancers, Caszper Canidate and Cooley Jaxson, gave Jackson private sessions in June 1981. Caszper says he still has the check. Jackson wrote in his autobiography that three kids taught him the move, and one was Bobby Brown of New Edition.

The clip in the tweet is from The Little Prince, a 1974 movie based on the children's book. Bob Fosse plays the Snake, dancing alone in the desert in all black. Jackson grew up on Fosse's movies. The bowler hat, the jazz hands, the toes turned inward, the freezing in pose. All of that came from Fosse. Jackson loved him so much he later asked him to choreograph the Thriller music video. Fosse said no.

What Jackson got from Fosse was the look. The slide came from the Soul Train dancers, who got it from a Black dance tradition going back to the 1930s, when Cab Calloway was already calling it The Buzz.

On May 16, 1983, Jackson did all of it on prime-time TV in front of 47 million Americans, one in five people in the whole country, wearing a black sparkly jacket and one sparkly glove. He renamed the backslide the moonwalk. After that night, the dance belonged to him.

A MIT professor who built the world's first neural network machine said something about intelligence that nobody in Silicon Valley wants to admit.

His name was Marvin Minsky.

He co-founded MIT's artificial intelligence lab with John McCarthy in 1959. He built SNARC the first randomly wired neural network learning machine in 1951, as a graduate student at Princeton. He won the Turing Award.

He advised Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Isaac Asimov, who was not a modest man, said Minsky was one of only two people he would admit were more intelligent than him.

In 1986, after decades of building machines that could think, Minsky published a book about something far more unsettling.

How humans think. And why we are wrong about almost everything we believe about it.

The book is called The Society of Mind. It has 270 essays. Each one is a page long. Together they build a single argument that most people, when they first encounter it, reject immediately because it is too uncomfortable to accept.

The argument is this: you do not have a mind. You have thousands of them.

What you experience as a single, unified self making clear-headed decisions is not a thinker. It is an outcome. The result of hundreds of tiny, specialized, mostly mindless agents competing, negotiating, overriding, and occasionally cooperating with each other beneath the surface of your awareness. You do not decide things. You are what is left over after the arguing stops.

Minsky was precise about this.

He wrote that the power of intelligence stems from our vast diversity, not from any single perfect principle. He called this the trick that makes us intelligent, and then immediately added: the trick is that there is no trick. There is no central processor. No ghost in the machine. No unified self sitting behind your eyes, calmly evaluating options and choosing rationally.

There is only the parliament. And the parliament is always in session.

This reframing destroys the standard explanation for every failure of self-control.

The reason you procrastinate is not laziness. It is that the agent in you that understands long-term consequences is losing an argument to the agent that wants comfort right now, and neither of those agents has a decisive vote. The reason you change your mind the moment someone pushes back is not weakness. It is that the social agent, the one that monitors status and belonging, just outweighed the analytical one. The reason willpower fails is not a character flaw. It is that you sent one small agent into a fight against dozens, and you called that discipline.

Minsky had a specific line that breaks this open completely. He said: in general, we are least aware of what our minds do best.

The things you do with the most apparent ease, reading a face, walking through a crowded room, understanding a sentence, catching a ball, are not simple at all. They are the products of staggeringly complex agent networks that run so smoothly, so far below conscious access, that you experience them as effortless. The things that feel like work, the logical arguments, the deliberate choices, the careful plans, are actually the clumsy surface layer, the small fraction of mental activity you can observe at all.

You have been taking credit for the wrong parts of your own intelligence.

The practical implication is the one that most productivity advice misses entirely. If your decisions are not made by a single rational self but by whichever coalition of agents happens to win the moment, then the game is not about training yourself to be more disciplined. The game is about designing the environment so that the right agents win without needing a fight.

This is why removing your phone from the room works better than deciding not to check it. This is why writing one task on an index card works better than building a sophisticated system. This is why commitment devices beat motivation every time. You are not strengthening your will. You are changing the conditions of the argument so that the outcome you want becomes the path of least resistance.

Minsky spent his entire career building machines that could imitate intelligence. What he discovered in the process was that natural intelligence, the kind running inside every human brain on earth, is nothing like what we think it is.

It is not a single flame burning in a single chamber.

It is a city. Loud, chaotic, full of competing interests, with no mayor.

The people who understand this stop trying to win the argument through force of will.

They learn to build a better city instead.

90% сыра в американских магазинах сейчас производится с использованием лабораторно созданного фермента — FPC (ферментационно полученный химозин).

Изначально он был разработан и запатентован Pfizer в 1990 году. Да, тем самым Pfizer.

Вот как это сделали: взяли ген химозина (ключевого фермента из желудка телёнка), встроили его в Aspergillus niger — чёрную плесень — с помощью генной модификации, а затем выращивали эту плесень в больших ферментерах. В результате получился синтетический фермент, который дешевле, быстрее и стабильнее натурального.

Крупная пищевая индустрия это полюбила. Больше не нужны телята. Нет ограничений по поставкам. Просто бесконечное производство одинакового сыра.

FDA признало этот фермент «существенно эквивалентным» натуральному сычужному ферменту и дало ему статус GRAS (считается безопасным), без долгосрочных исследований на людях — только 90-дневные испытания на крысах.

Хуже всего то, что это почти не указывается напрямую на упаковке.

И вот где становится неприятно: многие люди испытывают вздутие, проблемы с пищеварением, кожные реакции или даже аллергию после употребления сыра… и думают, что дело в молоке. Но всё больше людей предполагают, что проблема может быть в ��статках Aspergillus niger или в процессе генной модификации.

Настоящий животный сычужный фермент — это традиционный фермент из желудка телёнка, который использовался тысячелетиями. Он считается более «естественным».

Как избежать этого:

This was said at a parliamentary enquiry commission in Germany.

So why isn't this massive news being reported everywhere?
