Today, Cereal Growers Association (CGA) participated in the launch of the 'Protective and Productive Safety Nets for Sustainable Food Systems Transformation: Scaling Up Climate-Friendly Homegrown School Meals in Kenya' Project, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The launch took place in Machakos County and brought together representatives from the national government, through the State Department of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Education, as well as county governments from #embu and #Kajiado.
This initiative will be implemented by CGA in Embu County and by Light Up Hope in Kajiado County, with the goal of strengthening resilient food systems, supporting local farmers, and ensuring learners have access to safe, diverse, nutritious, and locally sourced meals. The Government of Kenya envisions a sustainable, nationwide Homegrown School Meals Programme (#HGSMP) that reaches all learners in basic education institutions, with a strong commitment to scaling up safe, diverse, nutritious, and sustainable school meals for universal coverage.
Through this linkage of smallholder farmers directly to school feeding programmes, the project promotes sustainable agriculture, improves livelihoods, and enhances food and nutrition security within communities.

Our CEO, @AnthonyKioko, has been featured in the @NationAfrica with an article discussing how rising temperatures are accelerating the spread and impact of pests on food production. The piece explains how warmer conditions are shortening pest breeding cycles, increasing their numbers, and expanding their reach. It highlights the growing threat to food security in Kenya and across Africa, especially with pests like fall armyworm and desert locusts becoming more aggressive due to climate change. The article calls for stronger pest surveillance, investment in climate-resilient farming practices, and greater awareness among stakeholders.

This morning, CGA represented by Dr. Osia Mwanje and Project Manager George Mabuka signed an MoU with the county government of Embu represented by the CECM Agriculture, Hon. John Nyaga and flanked by other county officials including Chief Officer Agriculture.
CGA is supporting 85 schools in Embu through 2 initiatives AABFIM and Integrating Regenerative Agriculture into Home Grown School Feeding Program in Kenya supported by AGRA and The Rockefeller Foundation respectively.
The school feeding projects aim to establish ready markets for regenerative agriculture produced nutrient dense crops like high iron beans. CGA is facilitating both production and off-take linkages, linking farmers with aggregators and institutions such as schools, which gives them a ready-market. Aside from farmers producing regenerative Agriculture crops, the pupils will consume rich foods, gain beneficial skills in agri-nutrinition and regenerative agriculture practices, set up school demonstrations plots and 4-K club members trained.
So far in Embu county CGA, is looking forward to impact over 8000 farmers and 85 primary schools, parents and caregivers, offtakers, teachers and school boards. The formalization of the partnership with Embu County Government will see even more farmers on-boarded and scaled sustainable farming practices. CGA deeply appreciates collaboration and support from The Rockefeller Foundation, AGRA and The County Government of Embu.

🐝Happy World Bee Day 2025!🐝
🐝Theme: Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all🐝
Today, @cerealgrowerske, along with its supporting partner Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) Kenya, proudly joins the global community in celebrating the vital role that bees and other pollinators play in food security, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture.
🐝Bees, especially honeybees, are silent heroes in our food systems. By pollinating flowering crops, they significantly boost food production. Yet, despite their crucial role, beekeeping remains undervalued, often sidelined due to fear and lack of awareness.
🐝At CGA and FtMA, we're working to change that!
🐝In 2024, we officially stepped into the beekeeping and honey production value chain in partnership with World Food Programme, and The Hive Ltd. Together, we've trained beekeepers, with a focus on women and youth, across #meru, #tharakanithi, #Nyandarua, #Busia, #Bungoma, #Siaya, and #Kakamega counties.
🐝Our aim? To position beekeeping as a profitable, space-efficient, and environmentally friendly enterprise.
Our Impact Since August 2024:
✅ 33 active Farmer Service Centres (FSCs),
✅ Targeting 2,000 beekeepers by the end of 2025 and currently supporting 747 smallholder beekeepers,
✅ 3,261 bee hives already deployed,
✅ 2389 Bee hives colonized by honeybees,
✅ 6068 kg of honey harvested and sold,
✅ Approximately Kes 4.5 million earned by 747 small-scale beekeepers
🐝Beekeeping is more than just honey, it’s about sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience, and changing perceptions. By promoting nature-based practices like agroforestry and intercropping, we’re creating ecosystems where both bees and farmers thrive.
🐝Let’s #BeeInspired to protect our pollinators, empower communities, and nourish our planet.
