i think this is precisely right. the actual economy (not the stock market) is, in fact, quite bad and people will keep just voting against incumbents until it improves (it will not improve)

Missouri voted to raise the minimum wage to $15.
People want left-wing policies and Republican politicians, and ... that's tough.
MIssouri voters voting for abortion rights, an increase in the minimum wage, and paid sick leave, and a senator and a president who strongly oppose these things is where we are in a nutshell

People are having a bad time in one way or another and they just reach out for someone who seems tough.
America is only coherent as an empire built on pillaging the ever shifting periphery, internal and external, which has slowly reduced the breadth of viable ideological positions to various visions of individualism. Trump is just an extremely expressive cultivar of the staple crop
