During the Napoleonic Wars, the British Royal Navy was having a tough time getting into a fight with the French Navy.

Finally, one day, the French finally decided to battle after sailing out of a Spanish port, NOW AIDED by the Spanish navy.

It was 27 British ships against 33 ships of the combined French and Spanish navies. The allied fleet formed a huge defensive line and dared Nelson to attack.

In naval battles, you'll often hear about "crossing the T." The idea was that your best bet for winning was to cross the enemy's "T," allowing your ships to fire maximum broadsides at the front of the enemy's line formation.

Charging head-on into a bunch of broadsides was considered suicidal. But Nelson was convinced the British navy was superior and felt honor-bound to prove it.

So what did Nelson do? He essentially yelled "ALL IN," split his command into two lines, and charged his ships straight at the enemy defense, crossing his own "T."

His ship, HMS Victory, led one of the lines. Both his ship and the other lead British warship HMS Royal Sovereign took heavy hits but managed to break through the French and Spanish line.

When they did, they kept sailing, cutting the French and Spanish navy into three parts, caught between Nelson's two lines.

Suddenly, the French and Spanish ships were getting hit from both sides as the British ships fired full broadsides in both directions.

When the smoke cleared, 22 ships of the Spanish and French navies were destroyed.

Not a single British ship was lost. Nelson, who died later that day from a bullet wound, and the British navy cemented their place in history as rulers of the seas.
