My theory on what the heck is going on with Merel:
Long and short, I think Merel dies, or more precisely, I think the Foundation places a soul from an ancient deity from the blank era (like Nautika’s god) into Merel’s body using the soul infusion experiments that they did on Urd.

I have more specific thoughts but Twitter’s character limit kills me, but that’s the gist of my theory. It’s def totally just hopes of where I want the story to go, but hey, I think it’s possible.

Additionally, I could see this driving a wedge between Team Timekeeper and the Foundation. I feel like Vertin’s allegiance with the Foundation will be tested and she might end up becoming an independent party like Igor. We even see her with Igor’s cube in the trailer.
