Kyle Shanahan says becoming an elite offensive coach required studying more defense, not more offense

“The best part where I feel like I got good, and separated myself from others was just, my dad always told me when I got into coaching, I always told him, ‘I want to call plays and be an offensive coach.’ And he always said, ‘Learn defense. Learn defense.’”

“That was the one thing that always stuck in my head as advice from my dad. My dad was so good at calling plays I was like ‘Alright, I guess I’ll learn defense’. When I was with Tampa Bay, they had the number one defense in the league, they had just won the Super Bowl because of it.”

“After I got all my work done with Jon Gruden. I spent so much time with the defensive staff. Monte Kiffin was the defensive coordinator. We had a small room it was basically just a trailer… Mike Tomlin, Joe Barry, Joe Woods, Raheem Morris, Rod Marinelli… I’d just sit in there and listen to how defensive guys viewed football.”

“In the meantime, I’m learning thousands of plays. So instead of just learning plays from an offensive perspective and going, ‘Oh, this is a really cool one…’ I was learning, ‘All right, well, this is hard on the defense if they’re playing this front.’”

“‘This is hard for that linebacker only if this is his responsibility.’ You start going: ‘I do like this play, but man, this play sucks versus this if they’re coaching their linebacker this way.’ You get an idea of how to attack people and how to attack rules. That was really fun for me. My offense was always predicated on what the defense was doing.”

“Everything I’ve ever put in fit… You learn everything. But it has to fit. It has to fit in what you’re attacking. It has to go with the theme. I’m not just trying to dial up plays. You’re trying to attack certain things and unlock certain things. And that’s a defense.”

“So you’ve got to understand that defense and how it all goes together. It’s still evolving. You never stop learning.”

To get to call a city like Montreal home for 22 years of my life is truly a great privilege. Being raised in one of the greatest communities there is in the world made life in Montreal so special.
