@AfricaDyslexia Very nice! A few months ago we did a similar Dyslexia Simulation here at The Reading Center, where we asked participants to put themselves in the shoes of a dyslexic student. It was eye-opening!
@DyslexiaTrainer This is nice, but "cleverness" as she said really has nothing to do with dyslexia. It seems like she is accepting that her child is less intelligent, but really she should be accepting that her child IS intelligent and simply learns differently!
The first time i truly realized this was working as a waitress. The amount of times people order something, and I'd usually have to tell them what it is and what's in it despite the menu having descriptions. Because they can't read it.
54% of Americans read below a 6th grade level, according to the National Literacy Institute. With statistics that bleak, it is clear that we need to support literacy efforts at all ages and levels. #TowardLiteracyForAll

This thread raises some great points about how literacy (or lack thereof) touches so many aspects of our society. When everyone receives adequate reading instruction, we will all be better for it!
My Roman Empire:
Illiteracy is so common that when someone online misunderstands something you said and gets angry at you for something you didn’t even say, there’s a very good chance thet they literally just can’t read.
When people notice that kids these days aren't reading, they are ready to blame any number of things: schools, politics, smartphones, etc.
But when 1 in 5 kids is dyslexic (most undiagnosed), maybe we should start there first.
