When a student’s paragraph lacks detail, ask them to highlight:

• the main point• the evidence or example• the explanation

If one colour is missing, they can see exactly what needs adding.

This is often clearer than writing “develop your answer.”

Help EAL students expand answers

When a student gives a one-word answer, do not immediately ask them to “say more.”

Give them a structure:

“I think ___ because ___.”

Then add:

“For example, ___.”

This turns a vague instruction into a repeatable speaking routine.
