The Ministry of Defense of the Afghan interim government has claimed responsibility for targeting military installations in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, as well as in Nowshera, Abbottabad, and Khyber District.
The Ministry did not provide details regarding the nature of the attacks; however, according to prominent social media accounts affiliated with the Taliban, the strikes were conducted using quadcopter drones.
The leadership of the major Pakistani Taliban factions; Tehrik i Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Jamaat ul Ahrar (JuA), and the Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group (HGB); have, in separate communications, directed militants operating in Pakistan to escalate both the frequency and intensity of attacks in response to Pakistan’s airstrikes in Afghanistan.
The directive attributed to TTP leader Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud was conveyed through a one page Urdu statement accompanied by a brief audio message. Similarly, HGB leader Hafiz Gul Bahadur and a senior commander identified as Talwar issued short audio statements in Pashto instructing their fighters accordingly.
In a one page brief statement, JuA leader Omar Mukarram Khurasani instructed his associates to conduct attacks with a focus on urban centers in Punjab and Sindh. Following Pakistan’s airstrikes on Kabul and Paktika in October 2025, JuA claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. After the recent Pakistani bombardment in Afghanistan, the group that carried out a suicide attack targeting police in Bhakkar (Punjab) on 24 February 2026 under the name Ansar ul Islam Pakistan is believed to be a possible front for JuA, which claimed responsibility for the attack under this pseudo name.
