71-Year-Old Woman Dies After Police Shootout Outside Florida Police Department

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — On Sept. 3, 2026, shortly after 8 a.m., 71-year-old Linda Jean Croteau entered the lobby of the Port Orange Police Department at 4545 Clyde Morris Blvd. holding a handgun. She spoke with civilian staff in the records section, pointed the weapon at employees, and fired one round toward an area where staff were present. No employees or officers were injured.

Croteau then exited the lobby toward the parking lot. Responding officers issued repeated commands to drop the weapon. Video released by the department shows she continued advancing while holding the firearm. Three officers fired several rounds. They stopped when she dropped the weapon. On the ground, she reached toward it as officers continued commands to surrender. Officers then fired additional rounds. They immediately provided aid. Croteau was transported to a hospital, where she died Sept. 4.
