@MerciaLord her brother, casting him a furious look from behind รthelredโs back. He quelled under both her and รthelredโs fury.
โMy apologies, L-Lord,โ he stammered. โI hope my sister has not proved bothersome.โ He gestured to her to play nice, earning himself a rude gesture in return.

Eadith did not know what to expect the day she was summoned to the Mercian court at Aegelesburgh. Her brother, Eardwulf, had been working hard for years, rising in the ranks of the royal guard, or so he would tell her on his โ
@MerciaLord โMen have done stupider things...โ she said, in a low voice. โSurely you do not need a mistress.โ She thought quickly, raising her chin, still standing her ground.
โIโve heard that the Lady รthelflรฆd is a great beauty. Surely mine must dim in comparison.โ She turned then to โ
@PrincessEllisif her wrath again.
โCome on,โ he said again, when she proved to be too slow, grabbing her and dragging her out of the tent. As he feared, Eadith was there, arguing with the guard. Her face paled when she saw Ellisif and she turned then on her brother:
โWhat have you done?!โ
@PrincessEllisif He shook his head, struggling to control his temper still.
โGet dressed quick,โ he snapped, โthe Lord wishes for you to eat with him.โ
He was sure Eadith would be close by and heโd need to move quick โ the girlโs injuries had already enraged his sister and he could not face โ
@MerciaLord He looked between the pair of them, a broad smile on his face.
โI see youโve met my sister, Lord,โ he said, cheerfully, not reading the room at all.
@MerciaLord moment, she felt the anger and the heat pulsate through her, before her senses slowly returned.
โLord, I mean no offence,โ she spoke quickly. โBut I believe my brother may have told you things about me that were not quite true...โ
It was then that Eardwulf thought to appear. โ
@MerciaLord โWhat I did, I did for my family, Lord,โ she snapped. โBut I am done with being another manโs plaything. Nor will I have another womanโs death on my conscience. Lord knows it has enough on it already.โ
She found her exit blocked and so stood her ground, arms folded. For a โ
@PrincessEllisif Eardwulf entered and looked away, embarrassed despite all he had done to her. His sister had tried to come back to help the girl, but Eardwulf has set guards on the door now โ no one could enter, and no one could leave.
โYou should have kept quiet,โ was all he said.
@MoreThanSilver_ รthelflรฆd: โIโve never really had much say in how my room should look before,โ she admitted. She realised then that was perhaps oversharing and quickly followed up with a: โWould you recommend a particular drapers?โ she added, lightly.
@MoreThanSilver_ follow รthelflรฆd. A chance to start again and make a new life for herself here, one that wasnโt dependent on the whims of men. Sheโd also like the opportunity to make a home for herself, never having had the chance before to select her own things.
She said as much then to โ
@_blossomflower_ Eadith helped pull the dress out of the chest and to help her change into it, tying up the laces.
โThere, Your Grace,โ she said, brightly, upon finishing. โYou look beautiful. The king will be much taken with you tonight, Iโm sure.โ
@MerciaLord matter how high he may be.โ She had thought those days were behind her, more fool her, she thought bitterly.
โI will go and speak to my brother with your permission, Lord,โ she said, turning to leave anyway with or without his blessing.
@MerciaLord her hair. โMy brother and I, despite what our father did, are well born and we are nothing like our father, may God have mercy on his soul.โ
She set the goblet down on the table with a loud thump.
โI did not come here to be humiliated, or to be made a manโs mistress. No โ
@PrincessEllisif against him.
โI will get you some water.โ She was struggling to untie the girlโs ropes, deciding then that she could fetch something to cut them with.
โStay there,โ she realised the pointlessness of her words only after she said them, rushing back out of the tent.
@PrincessEllisif Eadith nodded. โI found him and gave him your messages, but...โ She lowered her voice. โWhat did they say? They didnโt say of anything incriminating, did they?โ She was worried, for herself and them all, fearing รthelredโs wrath upon them if he suspected them of conspiring โ
