IIRC, it seems that when #RoyCooper was Governor, he moved the state DMV HQ from state capitol Raleigh to his home county in Rocky Mount. I wonder if and/or how many of his cousins benefitted? #construction #stateemployment #realestate @whatleywarroom

In 2020, I was a New Hanover County Commissioner, neck-deep into the covid era craziness, about to complete my 2nd term and resume private life.

By that point in Covid’s first year, it had dawned on some of us that early policy positions adopted mostly by Democrats were crushing NC families and that the ‘science’ cited as the underpinning of these policies had been one-sided from the beginning and intended to support Draconian lock-downs, harmful school-closings, and preposterous Orwellian enforcement of questionable emergency orders.

I did what I could to expose the devastating effects I was seeing firsthand, of keeping kids out of school, cancelling preventative care medical procedures, closing churches and courtrooms, and undermining voting procedures, all in the name of “stopping the spread”.

I remember thinking how hubristic it was for government to really think it could control an air-borne virus and I knew almost from day one that it would eventually become endemic in our lives and that politicians were not going to control it.

It was an awful, awful time, and one morning in October 2020, my frustration reached a crescendo. I knew that the cure was becoming worse than the disease, and in desperation, I reached out to Governor Roy Cooper (now a US Senate Candidate) on his personal phone, and sent the text, below.

Up to then, when I’d called him, he’d always called me back or had a staff member do so, and during my 8 years serving in public office, I interacted with him on enough occasions to form an opinion as to his leadership style and general competency.

Though he was cordial on the surface, after the in-person meetings, personal phone calls, and times I watched him closely, I quickly concluded that his “leadership” style was not the product of deep thought and analysis of policy, except when it would comport with prevailing left-wing narratives, especially where Covid was concerned.

Instead, his decisions were based on polling data and talking points from his political allies and little else. At least, that’s what I witnessed.

I hoped the text might spur him to read and consider other points of view, more than just what he was being told by his public-health officials (Mandy Cohen, et al) and that he might widen his policy-making aperture and see the devastating impacts his ‘emergency’ decisions were having on businesses, real people, and their families.

This week, Cooper is finally facing some (albeit, very little) scrutiny over his prison/inmate Covid settlement that released 3500 criminals from NC prisons, many of whom went on to commit violent crimes. He should face more of this kind of questioning, given that he seeks to represent us in the US Senate.

It should surprise no one that I am supporting @WhatleyNC over Cooper for the US Senate and there are a lot of reasons why, but high among them is how badly Cooper failed when it really mattered.

Michael Whatley has a clear view of the world around us, will promote policies with which I agree, and he carries a healthy distrust of government control over our lives.

On this last measure alone, he should get your support, too.

@SharylAttkisson The ones I've heard about most often is when the daily routine is broken. The mom is sick and dad takes the child to daycare. The child's in the backseat sleeping, and dad out of habit drives to work, parks the car and leaves. Or vice-versa. Whatever breaks the routine.
