What Finland Did About Male Suicide, And What Australia Can Learn...
In the late 1980s, Finland faced one of the highest suicide rates in Europe, concentrated among men: rural, middle-aged, isolated, often drinking heavily.
Instead of repeating the familiar line that โmen just wonโt seek helpโ Finland asked a better question: Who is dying, where, and why?
They launched a national study examining every single suicide in one year through detailed psychological autopsies. The data showed clear risk clusters: rural men, alcohol misuse, rejected military conscripts, and people with no prior mental health contact.
Then they acted...
In 1992, Finland implemented a National Suicide Prevention Project with a bold goal: reduce suicides by 20% in ten years. It mobilised schools, churches, the military, media, addiction services, hunting clubs and local communities.
Key principles:
โข Target high-risk male groups directly
โข Bring support to where men already are (army barracks, forests, workplaces)
โข Train local gatekeepers such as clergy, teachers, police, journalists
โข Mandate follow-ups after suicide attempts
โข Treat male suicide as a gendered issue
Projects like Hyvรค Mehtรคkaveri trained hunters to look out for their โhunting mateโ. Rejected conscripts were offered vocational and social support, instead of stigma.
It worked.
Suicides fell by 20% during implementation. By 2023, Finlandโs male suicide rate had dropped 61% from its 1990 peak.
Finland proved something vital: male suicide is preventable when a nation chooses to see men clearly and respond precisely.
Australia now faces persistently high male suicide rates. The lesson from Finland is not more slogans or hotlines alone. It is:
1๏ธโฃ Conduct deep, case-level research
2๏ธโฃ Name men explicitly as a priority
3๏ธโฃ Build prevention into everyday male spaces
4๏ธโฃ Fund long-term, locally tailored strategies
5๏ธโฃ Mobilise whole communities, not just clinicians
If a small Nordic nation can massively reduce the harm from suicide, then so can we.
The question isn't whether male suicide can be reduced. The question is whether we are willing to do the hard, coordinated work to reduce it.
Lives depend on that answer.

It is with heavy hearts that we share that Haru Urara passed away on September 9.
The legendary racehorse's legacy serves as the inspiration for the character of the same name in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
We share our condolences to all the staff involved in Haru Urara's care.
Im going to take this a step further.
A lot of low IQ individuals who didnt normally end up online or at least had other outlets joined in on the internet and anime thanks to the pandemic.
A lot of people suffered breaks from that and joined crap social circles and because theyโre so easy influenced, adopted the views of others who are stupid.
This paired with the hollywood/elite propaganda that youthful looks make you a pedo for whatever reason is completely frying the unintelligentโs brains.
20 year olds in hollywood are mocked and picked apart, they see the rhetoric, and there are no โiconsโ in their age group anymore. So they make themselves look like the older women who wont bow out and let the next gen of talent take center stage.
That propaganda spreads to animation because the virtue signaling is the only way these people get social interaction because their personalities are as interesting as a dead beetle on a summerโs sidewalk.
Cosplayers cant even cosplay without some loser coming in saying โyou look like a childโ.
Honestly? Go back to making fun of us because that was better than these people supposedly โliking animeโ.
These people dont want to be here.
We dont want them here.
Just go back to your greys anatomy or whatever losers watch.
Words have lost meaning thanks to these idiots and i never thought in a million years i would have to explain what loli is, how fiction isnt real, how the most compelling stories ever crafted are centered around the โtabooโ.
But we all know it isnt a battle of facts.
Itโs us caring about something.
And itโs them trying to take it.
Alright, I've had 2 cups of coffee, so I feel up to this now.
Normally, I'd go off on the whole women in gaming, real women gamers need to strike back, etc.
But I would like to focus on something else.
Something that, unfortunately, is a much wider problem than just one lame chick playing victim for attention.
What we are seeing here is a case of learned helplessness, turned then into weaponized weakness.
This is a predominantly female behavior - but no matter who is displaying it, its manipulative and wrong.
This game provides tools she could easily employ to avoid these situations, but she chooses to continue her exposure to this behavior. And then it becomes everyone else's fault when it happens to her.
We see this same weaponized helplessness in the current push for "online safety" laws.
Parents are provided with many, many, many tools to avoid their children being exposed to things, but in a continuation of this same "its everyone else's responsibility to protect me" mindset, the politicians push for rules that will do nothing but make Normal adults easier to track.
This behavior bothers me not just because of what it does to gaming directly, but how it insidiously snakes its way through everything.
You are your own responsibility. Your kids are your responsibility.
Yes, everyone else's behavior is their responsibility as well, but if you know a situation is bad and you make no effort to to use the tools provided to you, at some point you are complicit in your own misery.
