He’s working a surf technique, which is actually correct here. Tackle blocks down or pulls, EDGE must close the gap first to play QB/prevent cutback, then get flat down the line.

Problem is he is late to react and gets outran. Bray sets the edge and pulls it up and that is where the EDGE should make the play while pursuing down the line.

Contrary to what may seem obvious, you don’t want to just run up field here, unless you have a call communicated with your 2nd level defenders. The reason being the pulling action typically takes the backers away, and you’re left with a large vertical crease.

In this case 22 and 4 work back where they would’ve been there but that’s not always the case and you never want to just improvise, hoping your guys make you right.

In summary, he’s doing what he’s coached to do, just is too late to react and lacked the athleticism here to make the play, which is not an easy one at that, to be honest.
