South Africa has been elected by AU Member States to serve a two-year term on the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, starting from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2028.

This election reaffirmed South Africa's role in fostering a more resilient continent.

To achieve the goals of agenda 2063, the Africa we want. We have to exert more efforts on peacemaking and peace building in our continent. Our continent continues to grapple with various issues, which include terrorism and violent extremism that has resulted in killings and maiming of 1000s of innocent civilians.

On this day, 11 February 1990, after 27 years of imprisonment, Cde Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela walked free, marking a decisive turning point in South Africa’s struggle for liberation and democracy. His release symbolised the resilience of a people determined to defeat apartheid and build a united, non-racial, non-sexist society.

Today we remember his courage, honour the sacrifices of all freedom fighters, and recommit ourselves to advancing justice, equality and true freedom for all.
