Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Interpretation of Stupidity (from his essay “On Stupidity,” written in 1943 while in prison and later published in Letters and Papers from Prison). Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Protestant theologian and one of the very few church leaders who actively resisted the Nazis. Born on February 4, 1906, in Breslau, he was executed by hanging on April 9, 1945, in Flossenbürg concentration camp—just days before the end of the war.

Core Thesis: Stupidity is a more dangerous enemy of the good than malice. Against evil, one can protest, expose it, or, if necessary, fight it with force — because evil carries within itself the seed of its own destruction and at the very least leaves a sense of unease. Against stupidity, however, we are defenseless. Neither protest, nor force, nor arguments achieve anything. Reasons bounce off it; contradictory facts are simply ignored or dismissed as isolated cases. The stupid person even becomes critical when confronted with facts.

The Nature of Stupidity according to Bonhoeffer: Stupidity is not an intellectual defect, but a human and sociological one. It is not primarily about low intelligence, but about the loss of inner independence and autonomy. Stupidity arises especially under the influence of strong external power — whether political or religious. When confronted with overwhelming power, people abandon independent thought and judgment. They are, as Bonhoeffer puts it, “struck with stupidity.” The stupid person is completely satisfied with himself and becomes easily irritated. This makes him particularly dangerous, because he is prone to switch from passivity to aggression.

Stupidity is often a mass phenomenon. It spreads more easily when power affects large numbers of people. Individuals are more resistant; in the crowd, however, they become highly susceptible.
Key Characteristics The stupid person does not act out of their own conviction, but is driven by slogans, catchphrases, prejudices, and — in our time — additionally by mass media and social media. When you speak with them, you are not actually talking to the person themselves, but to the phrases and ideas that have gained power over them. You cannot convince a stupid person through reason — it is pointless and can even be dangerous. The power of one side depends on the stupidity of the other.

Context and Contemporary Relevance: Bonhoeffer wrote this during the height of National Socialism as a warning. He observed that many people were not primarily evil, but stupid — and had therefore become willing instruments of the regime. His analysis remains a sharp critique of authoritarian systems, propaganda, and society’s tendency to surrender independent thinking under pressure. Bonhoeffer emphasizes that to combat stupidity, we must first understand its true nature: it is not an innate trait, but the result of specific social and political conditions — particularly the exertion of overwhelming power.
