The silence was pleasant. Death usually was. People often spoke of an eerie silence settling over a room after someone died. I never understood what made it eerie. The dead were quiet because there was no longer anything requiring them to be otherwise.
It was the living who ruined it with their crying, screaming, praying and occasionally throwing themselves across the body. Bothersome.
The house I was invited to is immaculate almost as if the dead was at home here. Hm. I wondered what kind of caskets the Collets used. It almost made me smile. I hope it was a smile. My combat boots clomped against the floor as I entered the parlor, my eyes moving briefly toward the man standing near the center of it.
He was staring at me.
I stared back.
One second passed. Then Two. Then Three.
Hm.
Perhaps I was supposed to say something.
"Have you ever slept in a coffin?"
I waited.
"They're surprisingly comfortable. The expensive ones, that is. Best sleep you'll ever have."
Nothing. Hm.
My attention shifted toward the woman.
Much easier to talk to. Walking closer, I take in the jewelry adorning her body. Expensive pieces. I hoped they didn't intend to bury her in all of it. Such a waste. Dead bones didn't need expensive clothing. She was an extraordinary canvas. Delicate features. Beautiful bone structure. Very little that would need correcting from what I could see.
I sighed sadly.
With a house this grand, I'd expected a more interesting death. Poison. A tumble down one of those enormous staircases. A cracked skull, perhaps. Head injuries were some of my favorite things to beautify.
I finally looked at the man again. Hm. Still staring. His expression revealed very little, but the body was considerably less talented at lying. Tension in his jaw. Rigid shoulders. Hand still buried in his pocket. Ah. Angry. Interesting.
I folded my hands in front of me and waited.
Perhaps he had something to say. Still...Nothing.
"You look as though you'd like to put someone in a casket."
My eyes returned to his grandmother.
"I wouldn't recommend sharing hers. She's rather petite."
Still nothing.
I suppose I'm still not very good at jokes.
