Poland and Hungary have been in conflict with the UE since several years now regarding their democratic records. Now they are resisting to the new proposals which link democratic standards with funding and economic packages from the UE.
Both Prime Ministers met to coordinate their resistance strategy towards the EU summit and later European Council meeting (Dec 10 - 11). Both countries agree that conditioning funds goes against the fundantional treaties.
At this point of the EU, it is more than clear that European values and ideals might not be for everyone and that these same values and ideals for sure will be the topics of discord between European Policy and state sovereignty.
Today the European Commission, under Ursula von der Leyen's mandate, presented its first-ever strategy to tackle LGBTIQ inequality in the EU. This is a great step forward for LGBTIQ communities to guarantee their rights and protect them from hate speech.

The progressive agenda proposed by Von der Leyen, surely will exacerbate the tension in conservative countries such as Poland, with its LGBTIQ free zones, and Hungary. There are also some other states that have had a harsh approach to sexually diverse communities.
The fact that this has been one of the biggest protests against the Polish government, shows that Polish citizens still agree with women’s reproductive rights and therefore that even conservative Poland still aligns with European fundamental values.
Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, the Polish constitutional tribunal declared that a certain type of abortion was unconstitutional. This lead to the biggest protest ever against Polish government.

The ultra conservative government lead by Law and Justice party, has been deeply criticized by the European Union due to its restrictive, homophobic, xenophobic and hateful policies. This would be a huge game changer in the relationships between Poland, its citizens and the EU.
As the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict continues, both Armenia and Azerbaijan call for a posture from Germany. Asking for a cease fire is irrelevant at this point, Germany is being pressured to take a more active role for peace.
