Nat Geo’s ‘Pictures of the Year 2025’ Features Save Soil Farmer

Shyamala Gunasekaran, an organic banana farmer from Tamil Nadu, has been spotlighted in National Geographic’s prestigious Pictures of the Year 2025 selection. As part of the Save Soil movement, Shyamala switched to fully organic, sustainable farming on her family’s land, rejecting chemical fertilizers and pesticides to protect the living soil beneath our feet.

From hundreds of thousands of images shot around the world, 25 truly defining photographs are chosen. One of them is this portrait of Shyamala on her organic farm, created by burning coconut husks and banana leaves instead of using artificial smoke.
