Tom Mulcair: "Carney said something very smart about the bond markets and the American debt situation right now. The Americans are in dire trouble. And con man Trump is looking for money."
When a group of YMCA campers needed to be rescued during the wildfires on our northern border, it was Canada who immediately helped. Not a word from Trump.
Ronald Reagan has a message for MAGA as Trump escalates the trade war with Canada:
โWe should beware of the demagogues who are willing to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world, all while cynically waving the American flag.โ
- The US Department of Agriculture correctly says on its website that "almost all" US agricultural exports to Canada face no tariffs at all
- The super-high Canadian dairy tariffs Trump often talks about are *over-quota* tariffs...tariffs that apply only after certain negotiated quantities of zero-tariff exports are met...and those quotas are rarely hit, often not even approached
- Most Canadian exports go to the US, but it's not close to "95%"; it was about 72% of goods exports in 2025, down from 76% in 2024
- The US goods-trade deficit with Canada has sometimes been $60 billion but often been much smaller, and it overwhelmingly exists for one reason: the US imports a lot of cheap Canadian oil
I envy Canadians. Our leader can barely string two sentences together.
It will be a tough time for Canada, but it is worth remembering that Carney helped the UK weather Brexitโs financial shock. He calmed markets after the referendum, deployed monetary tools to cushion the economy, and extended his term to help steer the country through the early stages of Brexit.
Unlike with Brexit, however, this time he is cleaning up a mess created by another country's voters.
