Exclusive: Ministers are preparing a partial u-turn on the steel tariffs regime announced by the government in March, after industry feedback warned that the new import measures would impose crippling cost increases on car and aerospace manufacturers. https://t.co/XuStC4WVJd
📽️Hello everyone. I just spent a day following one of the @bankofengland's interest rate setters as he toured the West Midlands, trying to get his head round the economy ahead of his next rate decision.
Here's our film👇 https://t.co/hBUeUoBrVi
The more we learn about Bretton Woods, the better. This FT interview of Ed Conway on his recent book, "The Summit", is a good starting point.

Gosh!
An enormous surprise and thrill to win this. Blimey.
Particularly chuffed it's in recognition of our on-the-ground reporting on topics from fast fashion to British Steel.
None of that would have been possible without my brilliant producer @aoifeyourell (the best in the business) - not to mention top-notch @skynews camera ops, editors and execs.
Thank you @PressAwardsuk 🙏
🎥Did Britain just loosen sanctions on Russia? Or did it (as ministers claim) tighten them?🤔
And what does this all have to do with Indian oil refineries?
My 10m primer on jet fuel, summer holidays, and how the economic war on Russia is colliding with war in the Persian Gulf👇
While @RhonddaBryant claims the licences allowing the import of jet fuel/diesel refined from Russian oil are "temporary and time limited", the licence itself says that the rules are "indefinite".
Yes it also says they'll be reviewed "periodically".
But no stated time limit.
Remember how last Oct the UK said it was going to ban oil products (eg diesel/kerosene) made from oil that originally came from Russia (eg refined in India etc)?
Well now, in the face of the current shortage, that sanction has now been canned👇
“And when I die don’t bury me at all,
Just cover my bones with alcohol.
Put a bottle of booze at my head and feet, And pray the Lord my soul to keep.”

BREAKING: UK economy unexpectedly grew as Iran war began, new GDP figures show
Business and economics reporter @taaffems has the story

As I understand it, under existing legislation, new licences are issued not by govt but by the NSTA.
And right now legislation says they're legal, so govt has to change the NSTA's mandate.
Cleanest way to do that is legislation (and it would be a bit odd not to legislate given they are already writing a bill).
I suppose they could issue some other guidance for the NSTA.
But the key overarching point still stands: they have to intervene one way or another to establish the ban. And they do so in a v different environment to the one that existed in 2024.
🧵The "Energy Independence Bill" just mentioned in the King's Speech is something of a bombshell.
Why?
Because it compels the govt to rally Parliament behind fresh legislation to ban new North Sea oil/gas licences (this has NOT been written into law yet).
This is a v big deal!
Oh and the proposed Bill will also formally ban fracking.
Probably less controversial given UK public opinion on that.
But fracking is part of the story of how the US has been able to produce vast quantities of oil and gas - much of which we now depend on https://t.co/JwMVNhRyYK
🎥INSIDE THE PERMIAN
We spent months working on this - on one of the most important stories in the world right now: A revolution in American energy. With MASSIVE consequences
🛢️More to say on this soon... But in the meantime please watch & share👇 https://t.co/Xz57p2d6zR
Either govt must make the case for formally banning new North Sea oil licences, in the face of a global shortage of oil.
Or it must abandon its manifesto pledge.
For more background about the N Sea, here is a deep dive from a while back👇 https://t.co/byus0rFc7q
📽️ From Donald Trump to Britain's wind power trade body, there's a growing coalition calling for more drilling in the North Sea.
Raising the question: if we DID encourage more exploration, how much oil & gas could we actually get?
Our MEGA primer on the North Sea👇
Ps it's longer than usual, but it turns out this topic has SO MANY misconceptions. Time to put some of them right.
