Yesterday, a print copy of my article for Feigned Flight Magazine arrived in the mail.
Serious historical writing needs patrons, readers, and people willing to support the work.
This magazine is building something rare.
It deserves to be read, shared, and supported.
The Albanian who resurrected Egypt without speaking a word of Arabic.
Muhammad Ali Pasha, born of Albanian parents in Kavalla, arrived in Egypt in 1801 as a junior Ottoman officer. Within 4 years he was Viceroy. He abolished the Mameluke dynasty in a single night (1811), centralised power, modernised the army & laid the foundations of the modern Egyptian state.
As Prof. Roy Casagranda notes this Albanian didn’t just govern Egypt; he recreated it from the ruins of Ottoman neglect and Napoleonic disruption.
His dynasty ruled Egypt until 1952. His mosque still dominates Cairo’s skyline. 200 years on, his aura is inescapable.
🇦🇱 Albania gave Egypt its greatest builder. History rarely gets the credit right.
What if an ancient aqueduct still inspired engineers after 2,000 years ?
At Segovia Aqueduct, granite blocks stand without mortar, carrying water across the city for centuries.
Does engineering like this make you wonder whether durability mattered more to ancient builders than speed or cost ever could ?
The Church of San Pablo in Valladolid is what happens when Gothic architects decide subtlety is overrated.
A façade so packed with detail you don’t know where to look first.
This stunning 1935 Duesenberg Model J is one of the rarest and most luxurious American cars ever built.
It could hit over 120 mph.
Only 481 Model J chassis were ever built, and this double‑cowl Phaeton by LeGrande, designed by Gordon Buehrig, is one of just 15 of its kind.
This pulpit by Giovanni Pisano in Pisa Cathedral is considered one of the most sumptuous of its kind.
His inscription reads:
“You who marvel, judge by the correct law!”

The best tiramisu I ever ate was in the province of Treviso, Italy — the supposed home of this “pick-me-up” dessert.
It looked nothing like this. It was served in a plain cereal bowl. No frills and very beige. “Meh.” But oh, it was surely made by an angelic Nonna. We devoured it!
