What once inspired confidence can dissolve into doubt, as principles give way to pressures, and leadership becomes less about vision and more about survival.
At the beginning of any reign, trust often flows easily β carried by fresh promises, bold visions, and the hope of renewal. Yet history shows how quickly conviction can be reshaped when ideology bends under the weight of surrounding influences.
There is another dimension which impinges on the local currency unit. This is the dimension to do with what is called IMPORT COVER. The Governor yesterday put it is very simplified, laymanβs terms: IMPORT COVER simply means for how long a country is able to pay for its normal imports assuming a scenario of ZERO INFLOWS of forex. Imagine us freezing all exports - which means freezing all earnings - how long we are able to continue buying our requirements from abroad on the strength of what value we have accumulated and stored as RESERVES, constitutes what we call IMPORT COVER. If we turn our gold reserves and forex reserves into IMPORT COVER, Zimbabwe can now go for ONE-AND-HALF MONTHS by way of IMPORT COVER. The goal is for us to have reserves which can cover our IMPORT REQUIREMENTS for at least THREE MONTHS or, better still for FIVE-TO-SIX MONTHS. Once there is a negative imbalance between the value of your total imports and the value of your total reserves, it means we are living beyond our means - DEFICIT. This affects the value of our national currency, bearing in mind EXCHANGE RATE is a PRICE between currencies. We can never have a strong ZIMBABWE GOLD - ZiG - in such a situation. Worse, we can never successfully de-dollarise in such an unbalanced situation. The building of both gold and forex reserves is key to placing our ZiG on a solid pedestal or plinth. This then is the direct relationship between GOLD RESERVES and NATIONAL CURRENCY, as well as prospects for DE-DOLLARISATION so we move towards a NATIONAL CURRENCY. I have simplified a very complex matter for ease of comprehension.
