@JillCastilla@business@lisaabramowicz1@FerroTV@CitizensEdmond@bankonroger@g20org@ICBA As one of the country’s thought leaders in community banking, your last few social media posts makes your readers think that you are perfectly positioned to advance the cause of institutional reform (or possibly privatization) of the payments processing function at the Fed.
Why isn’t FedNow being used for banks to sweep to and from the Discount Window? Why can’t we fund a home purchase on a Saturday? Why do we get charged a “cash letter” & pay extra for night processing when checks process electronically since 2004? These are all changes that can be changed within the Fed quite easily & quickly.
We need simple payments reform now. Wire cutoffs at 5pm. Electronic check penalized pricing after hours AND charges for cash letters, encouraging large batches. No access to the discount window after hours. It’s crazy how we’ll focus on the digital assets yet ignore the basics.
@bank_reg I believe the leverage used to make national banks toe the line is that they would not be eligible to receive public deposits from the State and its municipalities absent such a certification.
@FirstSquawk Just taking a ride and surfing the wave of treasury debt issuance… until we have to bail out the repo market or something repo market adjacent.
@petereharrell Just wait for the borrowing spurt needed to fund the social security shortfall projected for sometime around 2032-2034. Does anyone really think politicians will impose a 22% benefit cut on the age cohort who are the most active voting bloc?
@JillCastilla When I served as OCC Deputy Comptroller for Compliance, law enforcement officials told me that to find a needle in a haystack, they needed a haystack. Sad, but true!!! Let’s fix this.
Reminiscent of 1980’s Comptroller C. Todd Conover and the so-called “non-bank bank”.
However, Todd Conover had the legal cover of the Chevron deference and didn’t have to navigate the Congressional Major Rules provisions. We’ll see how this works out.

@SecScottBessent@robblackwellAB Successful Federal Reserve reform would be a wonderful testament to a career of dedicated loyalty to the mutually-held objective of a safe, sound, and prosperous banking system that continues to contribute to the common good. We will miss her incisive analysis and cutting wit.
@Jeremy_Kress Wow! Succinctly structured and beautifully argued.
I agree that topics like these need to be interagency products. But preferably coordinated through the FFIEC, so that it permeates all of the nooks and crannies of the depository institutions landscape.
@Jeremy_Kress Why isn’t this and the OCC/FDIC NPR not coordinated through the FFIEC so that it’s a level bank supervisory landscape for all players? The FFIEC could also coordinate examiner training and independently monitor the desired changes in the supervisory cultures of the member agencies
What I’ve Learned About Running a Bank
Over time, I’ve realized that running a bank isn’t just about balance sheets and regulations...it’s about people, discipline, and clarity of purpose. A few lessons that have stuck with me:
Deposits are trust before they are dollars. Every account is a vote of confidence. When customers place their money with you, they’re trusting that you’ll steward it well and use it to strengthen the community.
Growth is simple, but not easy. Banks don’t grow because of flashy products. They grow because of relentless execution, consistency, and finding ways to be indispensable in people’s financial lives.
Culture outperforms strategy. A motivated team who believes in the mission will outperform a brilliant plan executed half-heartedly. Build the right culture, and strategy follows.
Risk management is leadership. Anyone can lend money in good times. The test comes in shaping a portfolio that can withstand the cycles. That requires courage to say “no” when everyone else is saying “yes.”
Community is the real moat. Technology is accessible to everyone now. What lasts is the bank’s place in the community. How we are showing up, listening, and being part of the local fabric.
Running a bank is less about transactions and more about transformation. It’s about helping people build businesses, buy homes, and fund ambitions that change the course of their lives.
That’s the part of banking that makes this job worthwhile and what I love about banking most.
@bank_reg Just one point of view, but exam/rating appeals should be handled by dedicated appeals staff seconded by the agencies to the FFIEC. In-house appeals always leave the impression of a kangaroo courtroom, vigorous protests to the contrary notwithstanding…
@bankpolicy No doubt a process gone awry. A proper uncorrected MRA should always meet the test of being the basis for escalation to an enforcement action. But, having an informal process for resolution of material issues saves everyone involved the expense of enforcement proceedings.
