J.R.R Tolkien viewed evil not as a creative force, as it is often defined in modern ideological or political terms, but as a corrupting and distorting one. In Middle-earth, evil cannot create anything truly new; it can only imitate, corrupt, and twist what is good to serve its own purposes. Throughout Middle-earth, evil never truly creates.

Morgoth could not create Orcs from nothing, so he twisted and corrupted existing life. Sauron could not build a kingdom founded on love, loyalty, or friendship, so he ruled through fear, lies, and domination. Even the One Ring itself was not a creation of beauty, but a corruption of power.

In Tolkien’s middle-earth, the greatest acts of creation belong to those who build, protect, heal, and inspire. Evil can destroy a forest, but it cannot create one. It can shatter a kingdom, but it cannot build one worthy of love. It can corrupt a soul, but it cannot create the goodness that was there in the first place.

Perhaps that is why this quote continues to resonate decades later. It reminds us that darkness is ultimately dependent on the light it seeks to destroy.

For Tolkien, evil was never stronger than good. It was merely a distortion of it. And that may be one of the most hopeful ideas in all of Middle-earth.
